Jo Kraus, a beloved mother and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025, at the age of 85 in her home in Salem, Oregon. Born on July 27, 1939, in Kooskie, Idaho, Jo was the daughter of Earl Hendren and Lucille Cole. She spent her formative years in Thompson Falls, Montana, where she graduated from Thompson Falls High School before embarking on a life filled with love, creativity, and devotion to her family.
Jo was married to her beloved husband, Richard Kraus, for 60 wonderful years until his passing. Together, they built a life rich in love and laughter, moving through various towns in Oregon, including Portland, Medford, Turner, and finally Salem, where they created countless memories.
A talented artist, Jo discovered her passion for decorative painting after moving to Portland. She taught at Mt. Hood Community College, various hobby stores in Medford and then in her own home studios in Medford and Turner, Oregon. Her artistry was recognized far and wide, with her painted ornaments even gracing the halls of the Smithsonian. After nearly four decades of painting, Jo made the heartfelt decision to step back from her art to support her grandsons, Kory and Carter, attending every sporting event, where she became affectionately known as "Nanny."
Jo's love for her family was evident in everything she did. She was a constant presence at her grandsons' football, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, and swim practices, always cheering them on with her warm smile and delicious homemade cookies. Her baking became legendary, with her cookies and impressive desserts gracing every family gathering, from birthdays to holidays and anniversaries. Jo took immense pride in her home, known for her impeccable organization and cleanliness, and she loved to entertain, creating special meals that brought everyone together.
Gardening was another of Jo's passions, where she found joy in nurturing summer vegetables and vibrant flowers. Family was always at the forefront of her life, and she would go to great lengths to spend time with them. A special joy in her later years was becoming a great-grandmother to Emma, age 3, whom she adored and visited every Wednesday.
Jo is preceded in death by her parents, Lucille Cole and Earl Hendren, and her brothers, Guy, Terry, and Ron Hendren. She is survived by her loving daughter, Debbi Kraus Dorn (John Dorn), her grandchildren, Kory (Maggie) Dorn and Carter Dorn, and her great-granddaughter, Emma Dorn.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society. They would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Brighton Hospice Services and Aspire Caregiving for their compassionate care during Jo's final days.
Jo Kraus will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love, creativity, and unwavering support for her family will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
