John Dudley Mauvais, of Salem Oregon, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2013, which was his 81st birthday. Born in 1932 in Davenport Iowa, he was the eldest son of Flora Ann Schaaf Mauvais and Henry Celestin Mauvais Jr. He was fondly called Jack, and his siblings include Donald Clement Mauvais, Paul Gerald Mauvais, Robert Douglas Mauvais, and Brenda Lynn Mauvais. Only Robert and his wife Donna survive him. He is also preceded in death by his wife Lois Klug Mauvais and stepmother Barbara Slorah Mauvais.
Jack attended Santa Clara University in California and Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management in Arizona, and he spent the majority of his career as an international banker, which involved extensive travel. To assist him in his profession, he became fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese. In the late 1990’s he retired from Wachovia Bank in Columbia, South Carolina. Along with his father and brothers, he was a sports enthusiast and played football and competed in track and field at Junction City High School in Oregon. While living in Hong Kong, he developed a passion for lawn bowling, which he maintained through his retirement. He also enjoyed photography, music and dancing, and he was a choir director’s dream fulfilled with his deep bass singing voice. In high school and college he played the bass violin with a variety of bands for a little extra pin money.
During his life he lived in Iowa, Idaho, California, Arizona, Washington, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Hong Kong. His last home was in Salem Oregon, which he shared with his wife Nettie Bell Steinbock, who survives him. They became reacquainted at their 50th Junction City High School reunion, and they enjoyed traveling and visiting their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his children from his marriage to Barbara Mirth Walton; they include Kenneth and Kattie Mauvais; Kimberly and Norris Brandt; Charles Mauvais; and Clifford and Jacqueline Mauvais. His stepchildren include Jane and Tony Moser; Aage Dale Gribskov; Christopher Lars Gribskov; and Michael Ray Gribskov.
His grandchildren include Andrea Mauvais; Dominique Mauvais; Erik Brandt; Alexander Brandt; Jason Mauvais; Jaimie Mauvais; Gabrielle Mauvais; Erin and Douglas Rivers; and Nettie’s seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
