

Mildred Viola Fields was born in Monroe, Louisiana to Walter E. and Annie Mae (Kennedy) Hinckley. She was the first of four children. She passed away at age 90, in Salem, OR, peacefully at home with family. She attended school in Monroe and graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1939.
After High School she attended Pilcher’s Beauty School and became a beautician for five years. She met Verle Fields and was married March 4, 1945 in her home church, in West Monroe, LA. After Verle was discharged from the U.S. Army Air Corp they moved to Washougal, WA. They moved to Salem, OR in 1948 where Verle worked for the Capital Journal newspaper as a linotype operator until passing away March 22, 1971.
Mildred was a stay at home Mom, supporting her husband and three sons during their early school years. She started working at the First United Methodist Church’s day care program before working full time at the YWCA’s child care and aquatic pool. She retired in 1986. They were members of the First Baptist Church where she worked in the children’s nursery for 50 years.
Retirement brought time to enjoy her African violet flowers, reading, volunteering at her church, caring for her mother-in-law and especially enjoying her two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Verle; her parents; sisters Marion Hinckley and Lucille Spears; brother Walter and son Paul. She is survived by sons Mark and Kerrick; daughter-in-law Leona Fields-Sasse; granddaughter Jessica Franco; grandson Brent Fields; great-granddaughter Juliet Franco. Nieces Linda Roberts and Jill Korn; nephews Nelson Jones and David Hinckley, all in Louisiana.
Family graveside service will be Thursday, October 20, 9 am at Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem. Memorial service will be Thursday, October 20, 2011, 11 am at Salem First Baptist Church, 395 Marion Street NE. Arrangements by Howell Edwards Doerksen Funeral Home.
