Allen Howard Lundgren left us on September 4th when his big, strong body was wasted by cancer. For the rest of our lives, we’ll be wishing he was here. Born on March 14, 1953 in Salt Lake City to Allen Henry and Ruth Horne Lundgren, he married his best friend/soul mate/true love, Andrea Alcabes, on August 25, 1984. Together, they are the very proud and adoring parents of Emily Ruth Lundgren and Liza Anne Lundgren.
Howard worked hard all his life, both personally and professionally, to make other people’s lives better. He began his career as a lawyer as a Reginald Heber Smith Community Law Fellow at Utah Legal Services and finished it as a shareholder at Durham, Jones and Pinegar. Along the way, he made wonderful friends.
Howie woke up early and whistled as he started his day. His body, mind, voice, memory (esp. for telephone numbers and rock lyrics) and heart were strong. He loved good music, good food and good friends. He cried when he watched the Last Waltz. He loved the Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton,…Springdale, Akumal, Paris, Istanbul, Jazz Fest in New Orleans, river trips, the Second Ave. Deli, his car, cooking the newest NYT Magazine recipes, Paul Prudomme’s chicken curry, over indulging, telling stories, attention, and making us laugh. Most of all, he loved us dearly as we do him. We are devastated as we contemplate going forward without him but we are relieved that his pain has ended.
He is survived by Andrea, Emily, Liza, his mom, Ruth Lundgren, his siblings, Virginia Bywater (Doug) and Mark Lundgren (Nancy), his in laws, Anita and Sylvan Alcabes, Nancy Alcabes (Frank Bernard), nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, a host of friends and his yellow lab, Henry Allen. He was preceded in death by his father, Allen Henry Lundgren and too many dear friends.
Thanks to the caregivers at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and all who have helped to prolong Howard’s life and happiness.
There will be a memorial celebration of Howard's life on Monday, September 8, at Red Butte Garden from 6 to 9 PM.
It would make Howie happy if, in lieu of flowers, you made a donation in support of an organization which makes people’s lives better.
