

Bernice Jane Hopcus Murphy passed peacefully in her sleep, to be with her Lord, the morning of January 7th 2022, in San Angelo, Texas. She was born February 20th 1937 to Bruno & Anastasia Hopcus in Bremond, Texas. She was one of 11 children.
Bernice and her husband, James (Jim) were married February 15, 1958. They had one daughter, Kathleen Whinnery Murphy who has been a long time resident of Lake City. Bernice frequented Lake City every summer until recent years when it became too hard to travel.
Bernice worked for TransCo in Houston and later she was a buyer for a large upscale department store in Houston, Texas. In 1972 she and her husband Jim moved to Hobbs, New Mexico where she was employed with New Mexico Junior College until her retirement. She was a very active member in the St. Helena Parrish in Hobbs.
She and her husband, moved to San Angelo, Texas in 2008. She became an active member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church. She and Jim also became hosts and friends of several exchange students from Korea. One student, Hee-Sun Do, has remained very dear to Bernice & Jim through the years.
Bernice loved her family, her faith in God, gardening, sewing, walking 5Ks in her hometown of Bremond and thrifting.
Bernice who was known for her genuine kindness and humor. She will be greatly missed.
Bernice is survived by her daughter, Kathleen and her five grandchildren, Allison Athey, Christopher (Lana)Athey, Jameson (Missy) Johnston, William Whinnery, Landon Whinnery and her five great-children Aubrey, Leland, Hagyn, Loa and Eve. She is survived by her sisters, Genevieve, Barbara, Helen and brothers Julian & Pete.
She is proceeded in death by her husband of 63 years, James Murphy, four of her sisters, Christine, Florence, Mary Rose, Margie and one brother, Joe.
