Betty Clark West, nee Taylor, passed away on Sunday morning, January 22, 2017, in San Angelo, Texas. Born in Elk City, Oklahoma, to John Anderson Taylor and Lula Mae Anderson Taylor on September 15, 1918, she lived and loved for 98 years, surviving all of her 5 sisters and 2 brothers, three husbands, and a son, Don Scarberry. She enjoyed two careers, first as a wife and mother, then in retail sales in the handbag department of Hemphill-Wells department store, was especially adored by her grandchildren, and played an active role in their lives. She was a fabulous cook, and her made-from-scratch recipes remain family favorites today. From catching rainwater for her houseplants to throwing scraps in the front yard to "feed the little birds," she had a love for nature and a deep respect for life that underlay her Baptist faith. A prolific letter writer, Betty's passion was always her family. She was both a teacher and a learner who enjoyed studying the Bible and being part of her church community. Her firm teachings and humble example were the light that shone for many who loved her, and she will be missed.
She is survived by sons, Nolan Scarberry and Larry Clark, daughter, Sondra Clark-Chafey, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
There will be an open visitation for those wishing to pay respects on Thursday at Johnson's Funeral Home, and a graveside service at 2:00 on Friday, January 27, 2017, at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, with Chaplain William Rosser officiating. Family and friends are encouraged to share memories, send the family condolences, and sign the online guestbook at www.johnsons-funeralhome.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson’s Funeral Home of San Angelo.
