Dr. David Marsh, 59, of San Angelo went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 25, 2012 in San Angelo. The Memorial Service will be 4:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the Biology Lecture Hall in the Cavness Building Room 100 at Angelo State University. A reception will follow the service.
Dave was born July 13, 1952 in Wilmington, Delaware to Frank Dennis and Martha Susanna Huber Marsh. He spent his childhood in Wilmington and loved visiting the Marsh Farm in Jasper, New York where seven generations of Marshes lived and worked. He was the Delaware State Wrestling Champion during his senior year in high school.
Dave received his BS from Duke University and PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a stalwart figure in the biology department at Angelo State University. He served the university with distinction for 29 years. He always believed it was a privilege to serve students and particularly enjoyed working with them on the Health Professions Advisory Committee and his sensory physiology research. His greatest reward was when they went on to achieve greatness. To his credit, nearly all of his research students went on to earn M.D.'s and Ph.D.s. In addition, he was very active in the Texas Academy of Sciences serving on many of its committees and as its President. He was very well respected throughout the state for his many leadership roles in this storied organization. He was dedicated teacher/researcher who cared a great deal about students. He was famous for saying what students needed to hear, instead of what they wanted to hear.
He married Patti Burkhalter on August 16, 1997 in San Angelo, Texas and they shared 15 wonderful years of marriage together.
David was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving family, wife, Patti Marsh, of San Angelo; his children, Andrew Thomas Marsh, of Norman, OK, Rebecca Lee Smith and her husband Travis, of Edmond, OK, Amy Lynn Lupton and her husband Brad, of Kyle, TX, and Hillary Jo Sanders and her husband Jeremy, of San Angelo; his grandchildren, Aubry Ann Smith, Lily Lynn Lupton and Oliver Walter Lupton; his sister, Susan Amy Liebling and her husband Larry, of Mt. Vernon, ME; and his brother, Stephen Frank Marsh, of Hamden, CT.
Dave was cherished by his wife and family. His greatest loves were hiking with Patti in the wilds of Colorado and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was always willing to help others. He was a man who could accomplish anything he set his mind to.
He will be missed greatly.
The family would like to thank the wonderful, caring staff of the MD Anderson Cancer Center and Odyssey Hospice as well as his ASU family for their support.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the M.D. Anderson Brain and Spine Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas, 77210.
