

Dr. Rice was born on May 7, 1939 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to the late Jack Sigmar Rice and Florence Rustein Rice. After graduating from Carr Central High School, he received his bachelor of science degree from Duke University and his doctor of medicine degree from Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Rice served in the United States Army, 1966 - 1968, and completed his surgical residency at University of Texas Southwestern, Parkland Hospital in Dallas. He began his medical practice in San Angelo in 1971 and founded and practiced medicine at West Texas Medical Associates until his retirement in July of this year. He was the President of West Texas Medical Associates from 1975 to 1995 and also served on the Board of Trustees for San Angelo Community Hospital.
Dr. Rice spent his life helping people and working on his ranch. An avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer, he relished time spent setting catfish lines on the Devil’s River, hiking through the thick West Texas brush as his favorite dogs searched for quail, and teeing off at dawn nearly every day. Most of all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who treasured time spent with his beloved family.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Rice is survived by three sons: Jeffrey J. Rice, M.D.,J.D., and his wife, Amby, of Brentwood, Tennessee; Mark E. Rice and his wife, Linnea, of Austin, Texas; and Rodney S. Rice and his wife, Ann, of Boerne, Texas. He also is survived by four stepchildren, Joseph, Michael, Paul, and Dena Kasberg. He was the proud grandfather of 15, including Jack A. and Taylor Rice; Jack F. and Natalie Rice; and Ryan, Alexa, and Georgia Rice. Survivors also include his former wife, Patricia Stamm of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Innumerable friends will remember him with love and admiration.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 7th at Johnson's Funeral Home, 435 West Beauregard, San Angelo.
