He grew up on the family farm seven miles S.W. of Wall, Texas with six brothers and two sisters. James attended Wall High School where he participated in basketball, football, track, and baseball. After graduating high school in 1960, he attended San Angelo Junior College on a basketball scholarship. James went on to Southwest Texas State University on another basketball scholarship where he graduated in 1964. He would go on to coach basketball and football at Edison Junior High in San Angelo, Texas before moving on to Carizzo Springs, Texas, and later, Palestine, Texas. Most notably, James earned Coach of the Year. Later in his career, he began teaching in the Texas Prison System in Palestine, Texas. He married Anne Stewart in Palestine, Texas and gained one step-son, Joshua Stewart of Lufkin, Texas. James was a resident at Concho County Nursing Home in Eden, Texas. He was a very religious and loving man who will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and siblings - Sylvester, Edgar, Roland, and Esther Glass.
Survivors include step-son, Josh Stewart, sister - Doris Schwartz, brothers - Dennis Glass, Bill Glass, and Jerome Glass, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at 2:00 PM in the Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Friends are welcome to join the family in placing James' urn at the columbarium at St. Ambrose in Wall, Texas following the celebration of life. Drinks will be provided in the Annex at St. Ambrose.
