On September 12, 2025, Joseph Saul Marquez, was unexpectedly called to his heavenly home. He was born October 4, 1983 in Stanton, TX to Saul and Olga Marquez. He was the youngest of five children. Joseph spent a small part of his childhood growing up in Big Spring, Texas until relocating to San Angelo, Texas in 1991. It’s here that he lived the remainder of his life. He attended Crockett Elementary, John Glenn Middle School and graduated from San Angelo Central in 2003.
In 2004, Joseph met the mother of his three beautiful children, Ashlie Fuentes. They were blessed with his three greatest gifts,; daughter Alize in 2006, and sons Christopher in 2014 and Ayden in 2022. Joseph loved and adored his children and nothing on earth brought him more happiness or joy than his babies. They were his entire world.
Joseph was a huge English bulldog lover and was at one point a proud "dog dad". He could be seen napping or cuddling his bulldog Ferdinand or Ferd. They were the best of friends. Anyone that knew Joseph knew of his love of Nintendo and WWE wrestling, a passion shared with his older brother Chris dating back to the 90s. You would often find him playing games or watching big events with friends, his kids and his nephews. Joseph had a love for music. His favorite artist being Nipsey Hustle, whom he often listened to. Joseph had an appreciation for the realness of his music and lyrics. It was passion he would sometimes share with those around him. He was also a lifetime Dallas Cowboys fan. You could find Joseph wearing his favorite Cowboys gear on game day. Win or lose, he loved his Cowboys fiercely. He also enjoyed the Texas Rangers, Texas A&M Aggies and Dallas Stars.
Joseph had a passion for cooking. He made a career working in the food industry for well over a decade. He was blessed to have worked at a variety of places in San Angelo. Some of those included local favorites such as Lonestar Cheeseburger Company, Peasant Village, Angry Cactus and Diego's to chain restaurants including Buffalo wild wings, Chili's and Cotton Patch. While working in the food industry, Joseph met many people along the way. They remember Joseph not only an incredibly hard worker but a great friend. He was called JRoc by his coworkers and described as a big teddy bear with an infectious laugh and smile. He will be greatly missed by those coworkers he grew to know as family.
Joseph is preceded in death by his parents Saul and Olga Marquez along with brothers Saul Marquez Jr and Christopher Marquez. He is survived by his sisters Tyna Marquez-Picon & her husband Gary Picon of Abilene, Tx and sister Crystal Helfrich of N. Padre Island, TX. He is also survived by his children, the joys of his life, Alize, Christopher and Ayden along with their mother Ashlie, all of San Angelo, Texas.
One of Joseph's greatest roles was that of uncle. He loved his nieces and nephews like they were his own children. They in turn loved him just as much. His nephews are Logan Marquez and wife Hannah of Anson, Nathan Ramirez and Drew Helfrich of Abilene, Trey Zapata, Axton Zapata, Tres Reyes & Noah Reyes all of San Angelo. Along with nieces Audrey Helfrich of N. Padre Island, Ayla Zapata and Avery Reyes of San Angelo. Joseph had a large extended family and is survived by his in laws Adam and Sandra Zapata, Angela Zapata and spouse Hector Reyes, Adam Zapata & spouse LaShawna Miller all of San Angelo and Peter Helfrich of Kingsville along with numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.
The family would like to sincerely thank the following people for not just their friendship throughout the years but their kindness and comfort to Joseph when days were hard, Cassandra DeArruda, Michael Garcia, Billy White, Shawn Ybarra, Rodney Titus, Erica Cabello, Christian and Celeste Diego and his childhood best friend, Brandon Robinson. Your words and acts of love meant more to him than you could ever know.
A memorial service in his honor will be held on October 4th, 2025 at 1pm at The Life Church of San Angelo. In tribute of him, we ask everyone to wear their favorite Dallas Cowboys attire. A larger celebration of life is scheduled for 5pm, October 4th, 2025 at The San Angelo Girl Scout Lodge located downtown on the Concho River.
