Born October 9, 1915 in Doole, Texas, Lela was the seventh of eight children born to O.S. Betsill and Nannie Ola (Snodgrass) Betsill. Her grandfather was Captain David Snodgrass a veteran of the Civil War and an early Coleman and McCullouch County pioneer. Lela’s father O.S., of Orange County Texas, was a young cowboy working on a cattle drive. While the cattle drive was near the Snodgrass ranch O.S. met Nannie. They were married shortly afterward and resided in McCullouch County for the remainder of their lives.
Lela always spoke of her wonderful childhood and had a deep and abiding love of her heritage and family history. Her memories of the times growing up along the banks of the Colorado River were some of her most treasured stories.
In 1933 Lela met the love of her life, Clyde Wiginton, a gifted musician and handsome young man from Brown County. They were married in Doole on July 27. Lela, Clyde and their five children, Gail, Peggy, Roger, LaQuita and Scott resided in McCullouch County before moving to San Angelo in 1957. Lela was a homemaker until her children finished school. After raising her family she returned to school and became a teacher. Lela taught, motivated and mentored many students at John Glenn Jr. High until May of 1981. In addition to the many young lives she inspired, her life was completely devoted to her family, her fellow brethren at Ninth & Main Church of Christ and her many friends. To those who knew Lela, their lives were touched.
Lela was preceeded in death by her beloved husband Clyde, her treasured sons, Gail, Roger and Scott Wiginton, two precious grandsons Greg Odom and Brad Wiginton, her brothers Oscar, Joe, Fred, Jessie, James, and Douglas Betsill, and her sister Veda Low.
Survivors include her daughters Peggy Odom and husband Gail of Scottsdale, AZ and LaQuita Bishop and husband Ray of San Angelo; grandchildren Jeff Odom, Micha Austin, Mark Odom, Kayra Reid, Blake Bishop, Bevin Gail Wiginton, Tammy, Deedra, Wynter and Celeste Wiginton; 12 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.
