Nelda Campbell Backus walked her path on this earth with grace, dignity and beauty. She inspired love and insisted on faith, loyalty and a willingness to do the right thing in everyone that surrounded her. A faithful Christian woman and loving wife, Nelda helped guide her family and taught her children to recognize their obligations to others. She raised them with a firm, loving hand and a great deal of laughter. Those fortunate enough to know her had a friend for life and knew her to be a woman with a ready smile, kind heart and someone who lived her life with integrity. Nelda spent her life in service to others with a primary focus on her family. Her greatest joy was her husband Mason and their 56 years together. They spent their time traveling around the United States with Mason’s business and made a large group of diverse friends. Nelda made the choice early in her marriage to be a homemaker and was there every day for her children and husband. She was at every school event and made certain her family knew the depth of her love for them. She enjoyed spending time working on their ranches doing everything from feeding cattle to fixing fences. Nelda was extremely active in her church. In earlier years, Nelda taught Sunday school classes, hosted teen groups in the home and served as an adult leader for youth activities. In later years, as her health diminished, she continued to think of others with visits, helping with Meals On Wheels and simply calling to check on and encourage others. She and Mason took great interest in the San Angelo Christian Academy and continued to be active in its growth.
Nelda Campbell Backus was born on May 25, 1938 in Moody, Texas to JC Campbell and Doris Guyer Campbell. She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband Mason Backus, sister Edith Grubbs, son-in-law Bige Atkinson and granddaughter Paige Corbell. Nelda is survived by her children Keli and Pat Pearce, Carla and Ronnie Hirt, Joel Backus and grandchildren Nelda Corbell, Heather and Brazos Hirt, Stormi and Mason Backus. She is also loved and dearly missed by great grandchildren Jackson, Jace, Slate and Avery.
