Oleta Frances McKinnerney passed from this life peacefully and quickly on June 12th at home, having just sat down to her morning coffee. Oleta was born May 14, 1918, to the late Jeff and Louvada (O'Neal) Wood. She attended school and was raised in the Lakeview community of San Saba County. Some of her happiest times were spent raising her family down on the creek at San Saba. In 1966, Oleta and her husband, the late C.C. “Toad” McKinnerney, moved to Water Valley and farmed until his death in 1973. Afterward, Oleta moved to San Angelo where she had the prettiest yard in her neighborhood, right up to today. Over the years, Oleta travelled all over the U.S., visiting with family and friends in California, Florida, North Carolina, Louisiana, New York City, and Las Vegas. She was always ready to jump in a car or plane and take off. Oleta was a longtime Dallas Cowboys fan, and she never missed watching the Rangers, the Mavericks, and Tiger Woods with her daughter, Dorothy. Her favorite thing in the world was to be with all her kids, especially Sunday lunch with Jessica, Eric, Chase, Patrick, Megan, and Joseph. Visits from Sasha and Victoria and Niki’s phone calls were also a treat. While those she leaves behind will miss her dearly, we know she's having a joyous reunion now in her heavenly home.
Oleta leaves behind her two daughters, Dorothy Baldwin and Mary Gonce; one daughter-in-law, Sheila McCoy; grandchildren Jackie (Chris) Bubenik, Susan Davis, Paula (Don) Plachno, Jerry Gonce, Fred (Victoria) Gonce, John (Cindy) McKinnerney, Jolynne Costello, Janet (Albert) Clearo, Joseph M. (Janet) McKinnerney, and Joyce (Todd) Yurchison; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. Two very special friends are Loretta O’Quinn and Gwen Smith.
Oleta is predeceased by her husband; parents; two sons, John E. and Joe W. (Betty) McKinnerney; two sons-in-law, Walter Baldwin and Jerry Gonce; four grandchildren, Jean Pais, John H. McKinnerney, Juanita Pollitt, and Christine Drennan; two brothers, Norman “Doc” and Cecil Wood; and three sisters, Juanita McKinnerney, Era Huff, and Edith Atchison.
Graveside services will be held June 18th at 11 a.m. in Richland Springs Cemetery with Oleta's nephew, Bobby Knight, officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Grace Temple Baptist Church Building Fund, 105 Guthrie, San Angelo TX 76901 or Cornerstone Christian School, 1502 N. Jefferson, San Angelo TX 76901.
