Verna Annette Green went to her Heavenly Home around 5 p.m. on January 10, 2011
following a short battle with Multiple Myeloma, a bone marrow cancer. She was gracious
and valiant to the end. Verna was born June 16,1993 in Clarendon, TX. She graduated
in 1950 from Crosbyton High School in Crosbyton Texas. She moved to San Angelo in
1953 where she met and married William “Bill” Thomas Green in 1964. They had one
daughter Teresa “Teri” Givens currently of Mckinney, TX.
Verna worked for GTE as an Administrative CLerk in the Revenue Accounting Dept. She
retired in 1991 after 39 years of service. Following her retirement she enjoyed several
years of traveling, visiting with family, and doing hand-work projects including needlepoint
and doll-making. She even won a ribbon for her Shirley Temple Doll at the San
Angelo Stock Show in 1999. She began volunteer work with Shannon Medical Center in
San Angelo in January of 1992 and served nineteen years as a hospital volunteer and logged 14,500 service hours in total. She was over the p.m. desk prior to her illness and worked as the service head Lobby Desk at Memorial Campus. The volunteers became an extended family and she found the work very rewarding. She was most proud of her grandchildren Carley,
Whitney, and Kieran whom she adored. She enjoyed visiting them as much as possible
and going to their events. She was known to them as “Granna”. They loved her visits
and stories of growing up on the farm. She had a special ability to keep in touch with the
ones she loved, friends, and family. She took an interest in nearly everyone everyone
she met and was always available with a listening ear.
We will all miss that very much. Most of all she was a Christian and tried to live each day as best she could for the Lord. She was a wonderful example to so many of us. Verna was preceeded in death by her husband Bill Green, parents Elna and John Fletcher, and a brother Dick Fletcher.
She is survived by her daughter Teri and son-in-law Scott Givens and grandchildren Carley,
Whitney, and Kieran Givens all of McKinney, TX. She is also survived by her brother Bill
and wife Vonda Fletcher if Bothel WA, sister Audene and husband Allan Abraham of
Victoria, TX, brother Ben and wife Linda Fletcher of Dripping Springs, TX, brother
Weldon and wife Nancy Fletcher of Mineral Wells, TX, and sister Edna Norman of
Mineral Wells, TX. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She is also
survived by her beloved dog “Bud” of 14 years.
