Herb was born May 26, 1932 in Phalba, Texas to Jesse L. and Ocie Belle Pennington. He was the 6th of 8 children. At an early age the family moved to O’Donnell, Texas where Herb grew up and went to school. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, as well as 2 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn, sons Randy Pennington and wife Lisa of Anna, Texas, David Pennington and wife, Bea of Anna, Texas, and Jim Pennington and wife Carey, of Tyler, Texas. Also his 6 grandchildren : Grandsons Justin Pennington, Preston Pennington, and Richard Pennington. Granddaughters Sarah Pennington, Abby Pennington, and Tori Pennington. He is also survived by one brother, Billy Dorman Pennington of Grandbury, Texas and several nieces, nephews and cousins and many loving friends.
Herb served in the U. S. Army 1951 – 1954. After his military service he came to San Angelo to visit his brother and met his future wife when he attended a church service at Baptist Temple Church, where she was the pianist. They were married October 30, 1954 and shared 57 ½ years together. He began his work experience in San Angelo with Laddie’s Electric Company, where he worked for 20 years. Then he and Marilyn founded and owned Pennington Custom Draperies, where he would continue his work career for the next 40 years. The business brought many wonderful friends and people into his life.
In early 1986, Herb and Marilyn joined three other couples to found Cornerstone Christian School. Herb played an active role in the spiritual and physical growth of Cornerstone for twelve years. He served on the Board of Directors from 1986--1998, and he coordinated and directed all remodeling and building projects during that time. Never a man for wasting time, Herb would begin building new classrooms, offices, or restrooms for the next year the Monday following the last day of school in May. During 1994-95, Herb and Buddy Vines spent most evenings and Saturdays building the interior walls, classrooms, and dressing rooms in Cornerstone's gymnasium. Because Herb spent so much time at Cornerstone, he knew most of the students by name; and the students always wanted to be one of his helpers!
Herb was a member of Lifepoint Baptist Church, San Angelo, Texas.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers of the past 6 years, Aimee, Minnie and Norma, as well as the nurses at Shannon Hospital, 6th floor South and his doctors, Dr. Steven McCloy and Dr. Chris Vanderzandt.
