The family moved to San Antonio, Texas when Del was 8 years old. Adelfa graduated from Brackenridge High School and attended San Antonio College.
In 1938, she married Rudolph Quinones. In 1949 they decided to open a Mexican restaurant. They named it JACALA after a small village in Mexico they had enjoyed visiting. In November, 2006, the Texas Historical Commission presented JACALA with the Texas Treasure Business Award for exceptional historical contribution toward the economic growth and prosperity of Texas. JACALA was the 1st restaurant in San Antonio and the 1st Mexican restaurant in Texas to receive this award. Even at age 88, Del had maintained her interest in JACALA while enjoying time with her enormous circle of family and friends. To date, Adelfa Quinones had been involved with her restaurant and enjoyed her life with her children. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, The Petroleum Club of San Antonio, and the Plaza Club, a former member of the Stardust Dance Club, the Altrusans Club, and the Business and Professional Women's Club, a former fundraiser for the League of Exceptional Children, and an honorary member of the San Antonio Junior Former Sustainers Club. She was a delightful lady who will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph G. Quinones; and 2 sons-in-law, Steven Rountree and Nile W. Wright. She is survived by 3 daughters, Yolanda Showalter and husband Howard, Lucille Hooker and husband Harry, Cynthia Klauss and husband John; a son, Rudolph G. Quinones II; 8 grandchildren, Laura Gonzales and husband Ernie, Karen Boswell, James Cowger II and wife Tonya, Steven Mandreth Rountree, Jr., Leroy Richter, Nile Wright IV, Wesley Richter, and Philip Rountree; several step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Nina Bevil; and a brother, Patrick Garza and wife Betty. Many good friends, patrons and staff of her restaurant will miss her.
Out of respect for Mrs. Quinones, the JACALA will be closed on Monday.
