Born to Albert R. and Rebecca Martin in San Antonio, Al was born to amuse everyone and always had a witty comeback in any conversation. He only wanted to make everyone laugh and be happy and to feel special! Whenever someone said, “Have a good day, he always replied, “I hope yours is even better!”
Al is survived by his loving wife, Judy, of 46 years and son Neil and his wife Julie and their two precious daughters, Luna Rae and Evey Soleil. Al is also survived by his sister, Graciella O’Malley, and her children and grandchildren: John, Dawn, Kaitlin and John Martin O’Malley; David, Anne and Sean O’Malley; Joseph, Nivea, Francis and Finley O’Malley; Albert, Sofia, William and Victoria O’Malley; and Michelle, Ed, Mallory and Weston Whitaker. Besides his parents, Al is also preceded in death by his grandmother, Maria Ruffino, in-laws Pat and Vera Baker and special Old English Sheepdogs Misty and Bear, and German Shepard Lucia. Judy could have been jealous of Lucia, because he called her his pretty little girl and whispered sweet things to her every day!
While attending Holy Cross High School (an all-boy school), Al became a cheerleader so that he could meet girl cheerleaders from the opponent schools. He graduated from St. Mary’s University and was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha. After serving in the Air Force Reserves for six years, he went on to be a buyer for Joske’s, worked as a photographer, owned his own gourmet cookware store called Chef’s Den and retired from World Car after working in every department from Salesman, Financial Advisor to Service Manager.
When Neil entered scouting, Al became a scout leader for eight years and then Scout Master for another six years, also being initiated into the Order of the Arrow. He completed the 84 plus mile hike at the Philmont Scout Ranch.
Al and Judy traveled out of the country almost every year of their marriage, taking them to 99 different islands and/or countries all over the world. Adventure and exploring was a prime way of life. When Judy told Al that obits should be written while facts were still fresh, he said, “Just say, ‘been there, done that’.” When Judy told him to pre-select his casket, he said that he wanted fireworks on his and a robotic arm that would wave at the crowd. We will all remember him with a smile!
