On Dec. 14, 2015, our father, stepdad, husband and papa, Lt. Col. Allie E. McMullian, Jr. received his final resting place. He had completed his duty on earth, and as the Air Force poem says “reached out his hand and touched the face of God”.
Called “Eldridge” from his birth on April 7, 1925 in Lakeland, Florida, he became “Allie Jr.” when joining the Army Air Corp in 1943 becoming a bombardier-navigator. After WWII, he remained in the reserves and earned his BA from Murray State Univ. in Kentucky. He then taught math, science and coached basketball till the outbreak of the Korean War. Accepted in AF training, he achieved his dream of becoming a pilot. The Air Force later sent Allie to Stanford University for his masters in 1958.
While in the AF, some of his achievements were: Chief of Computer Missile Systems at Hahn Simbach AFB in Germany, Asst. Chief of the Computer division at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. At Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, Allie was Chief of operations for pilot training. His last assignment was as an Advisor to the Vietnamese Joint Chief of Staff retiring upon return to the U.S. on July 1, 1973, beginning his second career in teaching. Allie taught math and computer science in High School and College. Upon moving to San Antonio in 1990, he began his 2nd retirement, spending his time on his hobby of modeling HO&G gauge trains, traveling and reading.
Allie is survived by a large extended family – his wife, Penny; three children David (Sue), Neal (Cathy), and Janet West (W.P.); three stepchildren Kathleen Nichols, Kristeen Davis ( John) and Karen Quinn. His most rewarding role was as “Granddaddy” or “Papa” to his grandchildren’ Lisa, David, Amy, Wade, Brittany, John, Christian and Madailein; and his great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all of us.
A Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 2:00PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
