

Andres Hernandez, M.D. was born February 26, 1960 to Juan Francisco Hernandez and Justina Avalos Ayala in San Antonio, Texas. He had humble beginnings and grew up in Laredo and was a proud J.W. Nixon High School Alum. He pulled himself up from his bootstraps and worked tirelessly to earn an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, and eventually a medical doctorate, his proudest accomplishment. Much of his life’s work was done in San Antonio, Texas and along the Texas border. Andres never lost ties with his childhood hometown in Laredo, Texas and often visited his mother and brothers and sisters at the family ranch. Andres was a comedian, a boxer, a scholar, a father, a self-proclaimed outdoorsman, a Spartan, a saxophone player, a brother, a son, an uncle, and an emergency room physician. Andres was infected with COVID-19 while doing what he loved, fighting on the front lines of the COVID-19 Pandemic in his capacity as an Emergency Room Physician. Ever the fighter, Andres gave everything he had, cracking jokes with family and staff members as long as he could. On August 27, 2020 at 11:32 A.M. God called the fight and brought Andres to be with him. He passed holding the hand of his son, an ER nurse and was surrounded virtually by those who loved him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister Josephina Marcela Posadas. He leaves behind four children, Justina Jacqueline Vidal (Joseph Anthony Vidal III), Andres Hernandez Jr (Lindsey Danielle Hernandez), Aurora Leticia Blackwelder-Baggett (Forrest Blackwelder-Baggett), and Victoria Katarina Zapata (Randall Zapata), four grandchildren: Isaac James Hernandez, Sophia Blackwelder-Baggett, Joseph Silverio Vidal IV, and most recently Alice Katharine Hernandez. In addition to his children, Andres leaves his much beloved brothers and sisters, Juan Franciso Hernandez Jr. (Evangelina), Herminia Cantu, Barbara Teresa Hernandez, Armando Hernandez, Antonio Hernandez (Gilda), Miguel Hernandez (Marianita), Maria De Los Angeles Molina (Rogelio Jr), Rosa Elia Jimenez (Marcos Sr.), Jose Ignacio Hernandez (Marianne), Leticia Arredondo (Agustin), and numerous nieces and nephews including: John Cantu, Cynthia Yvette Cantu, David Alfredo Cantu, Edgar Kristopher Cantu, Elizabeth Kristina Cantu,Juan Franciso Hernandez III, Selina Hernandez, Jose Angel Hernandez, Rolando Hernandez, Jasmine L. Velez, Maricela J. Lozano, Erika Estrada, Vanessa M.Hernandez, AJ Hernandez, Antonio Hernandez, Diego Antonio Hernandez, Clarisa Hernandez, Chrysantha Hernandez, Chloe Hernandez, Miguel Hernandez Jr, Magnolia Hernandez, Maria Elvira Molina, Rogelio Molina III, Jacinto Molina, Roel Molina, Ricardo Molina, Viviana Molina, Marcos Jimenez Jr, Esmeralda Jimenez, Kassandra Jimenez, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jessica Jimenez, Robert Trevino, Ian Lee Trevino, Samuel Alejandro Arredondo (deceased), Christopher Lee Arredondo, Abigail Marie Arredondo, Melissa posadas, Jose Ignacio Jr, and Melinda Joe Hernandez.
A socially distanced Reflective Remembrance will be held for Andres at the VA Hospital, 7400 Merton Minter, San Antonio, Tx, 78299 at the ALM chapel from 2:00 PM- 2:30 PM (H-204) on Tuesday September 1, 2020.
A visitation will be held Wednesday September 2, 2020 from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM for family and friends at the Sunset Northwest Funeral Home at 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio Texas, 78238. The visitation will be followed by a memorial service at 11:00 A.M. at the same location. This service will be live streamed out of respect for the manner of Andres’s death and his family’s desire to respect public health initiatives to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Masks covering the nose and mouth completely are expected for those in attendance for services.
Andres’s final burial will be held in Laredo, Texas where he will be laid to rest with his mother at a later date.
