Angeline (Angie) Ellis was 99 years old - nine months shy of her 100th birthday - when she passed on Sunday, February 6, 2022. A San Antonio native, Angie was born in the Denver Heights neighborhood in 1922 to Michael and Minnie Ellis. Angies father was an immigrant from Greece who passed through Ellis Island; at the time, his last name was Eliopulos and was later changed to Ellis. He was also one of the founding fathers of St. Sophias Greek Orthodox Church on North St. Marys Street where Angie was Baptized.
Angie graduated from Brackenridge High School and Draughons Business College. Upon graduation her stenography skills earned her a position with the United States Army to work at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston.
At BAMC Angie took care of our boys and girls from WWII and Korea through Vietnam. She started in the patient administration division in 1943 and later served as a Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer where she retired with accolades (employee of the year).
After retiring she volunteered to serve at Sams Shelter, Haven for Hope, and the United Way of San Antonio where she was awarded the Unsung Hero Volunteer of the Year Award in 2007. In addition, she volunteered at several churches to provide Lenten Luncheons for the needy. At St. Marks she was awarded membership to Daughters of the King.
She was preceded in death by her father Michael, her mother Minnie, and her brothers Lawrence, Michael (wife Bessie), and Steve (wife Nita). She is survived by her nieces (Betty, Rita, and Pat) and nephews (Michael and Steve), as well as four grandnieces (Faye, Gayle, Brooke, and Meredith), four grandnephews (Milton, Michael, Reagan, and Robert), a great-grandniece (Lauren), and three great-grandnephews (Conner, Zach, and Vincent).
Angie never knew a stranger and was a friend to all. She lived in Olmos Park for well over 50 years. Her house had an open door for all her nieces and nephews, many of whom lived there at one time or another.
When you hear a church bell ring, say a prayer for our Yellow Rose of Texas, Angie.
