

Anita Richards Mayer, age 97, passed away December 10, 2015. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, she attended Rider College and was a member of the United States Field Hockey Team. In 1940, she married her high school sweetheart, Lt. Col. William H. Mayer, who preceded her in death after 56 years of marriage. After her husband was shot down over Naples, Italy during WWII and taken prisoner, Anita became Co-Chairman of the Northeast P.O.W. Association and an active member of the Red Cross. She would appear on radio to speak about various charity affairs, as well as ride to Philadelphia every Wednesday to fill boxes to be sent to the prisoners of war. In 1955, Lt. Col. Mayer and Anita moved to San Antonio where they operated a successful real estate business for 35 years. In addition to real estate, she had a passion for hunting, fishing, bowling, and painting.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, William H. and Barbara K. Mayer; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl L. and William E. Bentley; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
A private gravesite service will be held for family and close friends.
