Ann Susan McLaughlin, a beloved wife, sister, mother, and grandmother, passed away on January 22, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones at the age of 74. She was born on March 24, 1949, in Brookline, Massachusetts to Elaine and Herbert Needel.
Susan dedicated her career to teaching high schoolers to read and write about literature. Her classrooms were not just places of learning but also of warmth and encouragement, where students found not only knowledge but also inspiration. Susan's dedication to her students went beyond the textbooks; she invested in their lives, leaving an indelible mark on each one she taught.
Outside of her profession, Susan had a tremendous appreciation for life. She had an unmatched love for dressing up, often seen adorning herself in the most exquisite attire, accompanied by her signature accessory — hats. As a member of the Holly Golightly Hat Society, her love for hats was renowned among her friends, who fondly recall her penchant for finding the perfect hat for every occasion, be it a lunch with friends or Sundays at church.
Susan's love for travel took her and her beloved husband, Bill, on 19 unforgettable cruises, where they explored exotic destinations and created lifelong memories together. And as much she enjoyed their travels, she was also grateful for ordinary days at home and time spent with friends.
Susan will be remembered for her kindness, her generosity, and her faith in God. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her teaching, her friendships, and her vibrant spirit.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Elaine and Herbert Needel and her step-mother, Patricia Needel, and her grandparents, Sara and Louis Hellmann, and Ethel and Joseph Needel. Susan is survived by her loving husband, Dr. William McLaughlin; daughter Shannon and her husband, Chris Dove; grandchildren, Jonah and Sam; sisters, Lisa Needel, Cory Morse, and Robin Rosen; and a community that will forever be grateful for the light she brought into their lives.
