

Arthur Francis Dawes, Jr. age 89, joined his Lord on July 5, 2011. He was born in Dover, DE to Arthur F. Dawes, Sr, and Ida M. Moor on December 13, 1921. His early schooling was in a one room school house outside of Dover. He graduated from Dover High School in 1939. A World War II veteran, he served three years in the U.S. Army Air Corp, stationed in Iceland 18 months of his service. After military duty he attended Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. He took a Dale Carnegie course in public speaking, and five parts of Life Underwriters Training Course. He has been employed with Mutual Life Insurance of NY, credit manager for Sears in Delaware, Registered Representative for John Hancock Insurance Co, in San Antonio, retiring after twenty-seven years. Arthur served as Sunday School treasurer, and money counting committee at Trinity Baptist Church. Presently a member of Woodland Baptist Church, and until his health worsened he enjoyed ushering and greeting members, a choir member, Seminar Sunday School class member and Son Shine Singers. He was a member of Friendship Force and a volunteer docent for the United States National Park Service at Mission Zapata for five years. He enjoyed world traveling, cruises and dancing. On many afternoons he faithfully walked the mall with his friend Wayne King. Everyone loved Arthur and his kind gentleman spirit. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Carmen Campos Dawes, mother of their two children; two half sisters and half brother. He is survived by his wife, Janie Chiodo Tope-Dawes; son, Arthur Dawes III of San Antonio; daughter, Shirley Kinworthy (Rick) of Arlington; step-children, Troy Tope (Tina), Todd Tope (Sheri), Tamra Carson(Carl); grandchildren and a great-grandson; sister, Jane Lafferty of Pennsylvania; nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at Woodland Baptist Church, 15315 Huebner Rd. 78248. Interment will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
