Being accompanied by his daughter, Diana; his sister, Chela and Brother, Gabe along with other relatives present Abel raised his arms exclaiming, “God Bless America” and fell asleep quietly slipping away a few minutes later to go home and be with GOD on March 22, 2014. He left much unlike the way he lived, quietly for he was well known by his big grin teasing ways and loud voice, always trying to start a conversation.
Born on June 1st 1936 in San Antonio, TX he was named Avelardo but was known by all by his nickname, Abel. He left home quite early to join the Marines, served a few years and then left to join the Army where he became a paratrooper, served his country in many ways but most known in Vietnam. After a prestigious career he retired here in San Antonio and was very active within his circle of friends but his all-time activity was being a founding member of the Alamo Silver Wings Airborne Association. He and his buddies usually gathered for breakfast on Wednesdays at the Drop Zone on Carson St. To conduct their meetings and recall their experiences of days gone by. He usually stopped by to visit with his daughter and her family on those days and his grandchildren were usually treated on that day with a Dairy Queen treat.
Abel is preceded in death by his mother, Anita V. Rodriguez; father, P.B. Rodriguez; brother, Gilbert Miranda and last but certainly not least his daughter, Sylvia Z. Martinez. He is survived by his daughter, Diana and Jesse Reyna, Angelina and Fernando Reyna; Sylvia’s children, Richard, John Anthony and Monica Martinez; son Abel and Rachel Miranda along with Abel II, Alyssa and Erik son, Xavier and Lisa Miranda along with Julia, Angelita, Vicente, Esteban and Mauricio Miranda; 2 sisters, Isela Rodriguez, Rosario Medina and 1 brother Gabriel Miranda also including 7 great grandchildren. “Donnie, Chloe, Nicolai, Nadia, Ariana, Lonnie, and Jayden.”
He will be sorely missed by many his family at Resurrection of the Lord but especially the waitresses at Aranda’s, Andreas, IHOP, Bill Millers and Baskin Robbins place he frequented very often. Special thanks go out to the Nurses in MICU and SICU but especially to the nurses on 3W at Southwest General Hospital for making my dad’s last hours as comfortable as could be, it was very appreciated and will not be forgotten.
Grandpa Lalo, Daddy, brother, friend, Miranda you fought the good fight and faced the end with the same courage and bravery in which you served proudly, thank you and God Bless You. Rest in Peace.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Trevino Funeral Home, 226 Cupples Rd. With a rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Procession will depart from the funeral home on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Resurrection of the Lord. Internment will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
