Barbara Tracey Anne nee Nehls Merkens entered eternal rest on May 23, 2003. She was born on February 1, 1929 in Indiana and grew up in Michigan. She attended Valparaiso University and founded KTZ Sorority.
Mrs. Merkens was among the group that started the first Ronald McDonald House in San Antonio, and was an active founding member of the Concordia Lutheran Church, where her husband was Pastor for 43 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Nehls and her brothers, Edward and Richard.
Mrs. Merkens is survived by: husband, Dr. Guido Merkens; son Guido Merkens, Jr. of San Antonio; daughters, Karen Ramming of Austin; Michelle Wood of Austin; Marti Merkens of San Antonio; 4 grandchildren, Kristine Linville, Guido Merkens III, Jeremiah Merkens, Matthew Merkens; sisters-in-law, Rhoda Canion of San Antonio and Helen Nehls of Traverse City, MI.
The Rev. Kim DeVries, the Rev. Bill Tucker and the Rev. Dr. William Knippa will officiate.
