Barbara Ann Howland Bennett Peters passed away on Sunday March 17, 2024, at the age of 92 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born in Providence, Rhode Island on April 29, 1931 to parents Daniel and Mary Madeline Howland.
Barbara lived a full and colorful life. She grew up on Long Island, New York, but spent most of the last 70 years living in San Antonio. She attended Trinity College in Burlington, Vermont and finished earning her degree in English and French at St. Mary’s University - all while raising six children.
She taught at Horace Mann Middle School, Edison High School and Burbank High School. While at Burbank, was the senior class sponsor, taught Honors English and started a French Club for her students. She also organized and accompanied her students on two educational trips to France, Switzerland and England.
After marrying Lt. Col. Martin Peters in 1979, she lived in Atlanta, Colorado Springs and Honolulu before returning to San Antonio upon his retirement. Together they enjoyed gardening, rock hunting, jewelry making, square dancing, camping and traveling.
Barbara was a member of the San Antonio Herb Society, the Texas Gourd Society, the International Perfume Bottle Association, and Celebration Circle. She loved animals, plants, music and books. She was a voracious reader and antique bottle collector. She was a font of knowledge - a veritable living encyclopedia long before Google existed.
She is preceded in death by her husband Martin A. Peters; brother Raymond J. Howland; sister Elaine McNamara, and daughter Virginia Ann Bennett and father of her children, Gerard J. Bennett. She is survived by her children, Daniel A. Bennett (Colette), Jeannie E. Laster (Cary), Carolyn M. Cowan, Elaine M. Pickett (Steven), and Amy Bennett Bastoni (James); grandchildren Michael Daniel, Marissa, Grant & Edward Bennett, Paul Laster & Madeline Biasiolli, Kelsey Herschap, Melanie, Michael & Monica Pickett, Nicholas & Matthew Bastoni; great-grandchildren Genevieve, Josiah, Jackson, Jacob, Alexander, Brooke, Abigail, Eleanor, and James.
The family would like to thank Jeanette, Anita, Julie, Lily and Janice for the kind, compassionate and loving care they gave our Mother in her final years.
