Our beloved mother, sister and grandmother, Barbara Letitia Rogers, age 82, of Shavano Park, TX, has been reunited in heaven with her parents, Mary Jean and Napier Rogers, and her cherished great aunt and namesake, Letitia McCampbell, of Goliad, TX.
Letitia was blessed with a wonderful life and seemingly boundless energy. She exhibited tremendous loyalty, devotion to family, indefatigable character, "occasional" contrarianism, and above all humor and hilarity. She was, as they say, a "hoot," fun-loving and full of joy, especially in the company of family and close friends. She had a unique mix of easy-going good nature and feistiness. Her friends and extended family will miss her infamous dinners, her generous tips, and piquant commentary on the issues of the day.
Letitia was a courageous single mother to her only son, Jim, in an era when single motherhood not only involved tremendous hardship and sacrifice but also carried a certain stigma. Through her actions, she taught essential values of thrift and self-reliance.
She had a special relationship with her grandfathers Shavano Ranch in Northwest San Antonio. Letitia spoke fondly of growing up riding horses with her sisters, appreciating wildlife with her father, and the expansive views along the Salado Creek. Her many cats and dogs and her horse, were her daily companions, along with talk radio, cable news, legal thrillers and books on US and Texas history.
Music and art played an especially important role in her life. Letitia was blessed with the amazing ability to play the piano entirely by ear, without sheet music or musical training. She was especially fond of Mozart and Beethoven pieces. She was radiant in her final two weeks of life as a guest at the San Antonio Opera Gala and a special family dinner hosted by her sister, Jean.
Letitia earned a BA in Art History from Trinity University, and taught kindergarten and elementary school for many years. She was a member of the Junior League of San Antonio and was a sixth-generation Texan, with ancestry dating to 1838 and the Republic of Texas. She was a long-time Episcopalian who completed RCIA at the tender age of 79 at the Atonement Church, where she continued to enjoy the beauty and music of the Anglican-Use liturgy.
She is survived by her only son, James McCutcheon, sisters, Jean Rogers Winchell and Jacqueline Rogers Goldman, and her three grandchildren, Davis, Ashley and Matthew McCutcheon, of whom she was especially proud. Son-in-law, Joseph Cooper, cheerfully assisted her in recent years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Jean and Napier Rogers, and grandparents, Wallace and Olive Rogers, and Wayne and Jean McCampbell Davis, along with her beloved great aunt, Letitia McCampbell.
Funeral services will be held November 19 at 11 am at Our Lady of the Atonement Church located at 15415 Red Robin Rd, San Antonio, TX 78255. The service will be live-streamed from the church and available for later viewing by family and friends who are unable to attend, with instructions to follow. She will be interred beside her mother and all six generations, along with many generations of extended family, in a private ceremony at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Goliad, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to OPERA San Antonio at https://www.operasa.org/donation or to PAWS Animal Rescue at http://www.pawsa.org/donate.html
