Bernard owned four of my works of art that were purchased through the Men of Art Guild on Broadway.

I will remember him well always.

How saddened we were to lose such a dear friend. Our hearfelt sympathies are with his family. In Paris last week we passed the Ile St Louis apartment several times & thought of Bernard often. Before we left we floated yellow roses in the Seine as we recalled so many good times that we had shared.He will be sorely missed but the many kind & loving memories he left us will always be cherished.

Oh, Bernard. What a life you lived! What friends you had! What love you shared! To have had you a few more years would have been the world's blessing but to have known you at all was mine. You shall be missed forever.

Seldom are the two words Perfect Gentleman more appropriate in describing a person than while speaking about Bernard. Although we were not close friends, the mere fact that he always knew my name when we saw each other, was flattering enough. We would bump into one another at various social events around town and at mutual friends homes. Bernard was always cordial, even keeled, poised, elegant, friendly and our conversations were without fail, intellectually stimulating and enjoyable. This was particularly true when the subject invariably turned to my home city of Paris. We often said that we would have to make a plan to meet there one day and I had looked forward to visiting his famed apartment in the City of lights. I have few regrets in life and granted, this one is relatively minor but I do regret having lost that opportunity. I still hope that I will some day have the privilege to visit Bernard's home in Paris. In a way, that would almost be like a small closure as a salute to him, from one of his many admirers. Although he was neither my mentor nor my teacher per say, I did learn some things from Bernard and I not ashamed to say that I admired him. What man in his right mind would not want to be somewhat like Bernard Lifshutz? I am thankful to his family for having a memorial that was open to all. Thank you to James and to his wife also for making me feel welcome in their home on that same day, even though I was never a part of their inner circle. My birthday falls during fiesta every year and on occasions, I was fortunate to attend Bernard's yearly fiesta celebration at his home. It was almost like having my own birthday party at Bernard's. Bernard, I am just one of the many in this community that will miss you. You left your mark on our city and for this we are grateful. You were more than a Perfect Gentleman. Fiesta just won't be the same without you.

James and family, I was so disappointed to learn of the passing of Bernard. When I visited James a couple of months ago he told me Bernard was doing well. I have been a part of San Antonio now for about ten years and it was apparent to me as a relative newcomer his many contributions to our city. I would like you to know that he was an inspiration to me as the type of person I hope my own children will develop into. A leader among men and women in both business, the arts and his community. San Antonio has lost a quiet giant and one that I feel priviledged to have known. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. I will always remember my conversation with Bernard at the James Carville dinner. As the Grandfather of multifamily housing in San Antonio he shared stories with me about the early days of development that I am privileged to have heard. His leadership and sincerity will be greatly missed.

Bernard was a member of the Board of Family Service of San Antonio when I was the Director. Knowing and working with him was one of the finest experiences I had while working at Family Service. up and down Geneseo, so young, so healthy, not an extra ounce of fat on him. But that was so long ago. He was

I first met Bernard Lifshutz at City Hall in 1984, when I was a reporter for the San Antonio Light covering arts funding politics. Bernard was meeting with then-District Five councilman Bernardo Eureste, who had made himself the "arts czar" for the City budget. No doubt Bernard was representing one or another or the arts organizations with whom he was affiliated. Bernard was wearing his trademark bow tie, of course, and was completely at ease--as he always was in every social meeting I ever attended with him. Over the years that I have been priviliged to know him, I have admired Bernard's self-possession, vision, business acumen, and his many remarkable friends, for he knew truly how to be a friend. He was a Renaissance man at a time when his town needed him, profoundly changing San Antonio for the better in many, many ways. It has been my pleasure to know him professionally in recent years, and I now especially appreciate the wisdom and experience and many gifts he has made to the Southwest School of Art & Craft. I told him once I regarded him as a role model for myself as someone who knows how to live well in every respect, and he laughed and smiled and shook my hand very warmly in response. I had the good fortune to share and unforgettable moment with Bernard back in the early 1990s when I was eating lunch on an early Saturday afternoon at El Mirador Restaurant. Bernard and a lady companion were sitting at the table near the entrance that was their favorite place. A beautiful young woman sitting in the booth in the back, sitting with a young man who looked very much in love with her, suddenly broke into song, rendering Gershwin's "Summertime" in a perfect contralto, with great poignancy of feeling. The whole restaurant was hushed, awed. After she finished singing, Bernard and I looked and smiled broadly at one another, and simultaneously joined the whole restaurant in bursting into strong applause. I like to think that the young lady lost her inhibition to sing that song because she knew there was an older gentleman in the room who would very much approve of her spontaneity and depth of feeling. We will miss you, Bernard, but your presence lingers among us in a thousand ways. Bon voyage!

Dearest James, Never having been fortunate enough to meet your Father I can only surmise that many of the qualities that I admire about you are but modest relections of the type of man that he was. How fortunate you were to have a father who lived with such passion and verve. I can only imagine the deep sorrow you must feel. Didn't your father live a full life! I'm Jeanie from next door on Terrell Road....it's been great watching all the incredible things your father did throughout his life. His smiling face and famous bowtie popped up in local newspapers and magazines as much as any hollywood celebrity! The city loved him as did so many people from all walks of life in this community. I wish I had been able to keep up with you all and your mother as much as with your father, but, perhaps that will change in the future. Good-bye, Bernie. You will be missed! As a runner, I will miss seeing you at the races around San Antonio that we happened to do together in the past, where we always chatted and encouraged each other and had enjoyable outings. As a staff member of the Development Office of UTSA, I will most certainly miss your participation at an institution we both care about. You may be gone from this Earth, Bernie, but you live on in the hearts of the people whose lives you touched.

I have known Bernard for a number of years. He was kind enough to let me use his wonderful Ile Saint Louis apartment for an evening with my non-profit association -- it was a concert of Peruvian baroque music. I still remember that evening's harmony. Bernard also invited me to parties a number of times. There was always the same elegance and harmony. I was struck to find that although as a Texas millionaire one might have expected him to be a strong Bushite, he was in fact most liberal. He was on my email list for the political information that 'Americans Against the War,' a group here in Paris, sends out. I must remove him from the list -- and already miss him. I'd write a 'real' letter in the old-fashioned way if I had the address. But even with this method, which prevents taking the time that would make one's remarks more of a gesture, I would like to say how much I liked your father and respected him. With sad regards,

Raul and I are deeply saddened at the loss of Mr. Lifshutz. Mr. Lifshutz was a supporter of Raul's when he served on City Council and in his bid for State Representative. beneficent life and was always a true pleasure to be around! He will certainly be missed.

Bernard was such a genuine person complete with a twinkle in his eye..which is so rare is our 'plastic-hyped-up' modern world. I'm sure we can rest assure that he would not like all of us 'fussing' over him.

Very soon after arriving in Paris almost 14 years ago, Bernard warmly offered us his friendship and his apartment as a lengthy stop-over before finding our own. Countless cocktail parties followed, each of which somehow, without fail, included new and different people. Bernard?s love of people, all sorts, was always evident. His warmth and generosity was instinctual; simply the core of who he was. Our condolences,

Margie and I would like to express our deep sorrow to the family for the loss of our friend and associate, Bernard; who, through his love of art, architectecture and culture exhibited the best that San Antonio could be. As beneficiaries of his work and devotion we have been fortunate if not blessed to live here in the Blue Star Arts Complex for nearly ten years. This collaboration between Bernard and Arthur P. Hap Veltman and now son, James remains one of the most successful and influential ongoing developments created in our city during the past 15 years. 
Both Margie and I will miss his presence and of course his Fiesta parties at his home along the San Antonio River.

Paris will never be the same without Bernard. Rumor is that Bernard's last words were, "Let's open a bottle of champagne." We did just that in his honor last night. We are all very sad for the loss of this great man. love, Susan

I am filled with wonderful memories of my personal experiences with Bernard. I served as the Executive Director of Partnership for Hope when he was the Chairman of the Board. His interest in finding strategies to address poverty were genuinely sincere; his professionalism is working with staff was at the highest standard; and his respect for the members of the board was truly inspirational. We all got to know his love for art, urban development, democratic politics, and his desire to make this world a better place for all. There is much to celebrate for a man whose life was so full and so giving. It was an honor for me to know and work with Bernard. His family is blessed and I thank them for sharing him with all of us.

I can not put into words how we at HRES feel upon hearing of Bernards passing. What a great business partner and true gentleman and he will be missed by all of us that survive him. God bless him and all of the Family.

Bullet Bob, Susan Chadwick and I Patricia Pratchett opened and drank a bottle of Dom Perignon earlier this evening in Bernard's honor. We're missing him here in Paris, the city he loved and plan to continue honoring him by going to his favorite restaurants and other haunts for the rest of this week. We'd love to have others of his French delegation join us.
