
Mrs. Bette Marie Curry Calland, 91, the widow of Dr. William R. Calland, and affectionately known as Muzzy by family and close friends, died peacefully of natural causes at Golden Manor Jewish Home for the Aged in San Antonio, Saturday, May 27, 2006.
Her husband, a family practice physician who obtained his medical degree from Ohio State University Medical School, died in 1993. They were married in New Orleans at the beginning of WW11 and were married 52 years. Her son, Richard Calland, died in 1998. Mrs. Calland was born and raised in Marietta, Ohio and enjoyed swimming in the Ohio River. She graduated from the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing in 1937.
The hospital was established in 1729 and had a long history dedicated to the care of the medically indigent of the city. She worked as a private duty nurse in Columbus, Ohio before leaving nursing to raise four children. Mrs. Calland was a sports enthusiast, who especially loved to cheer on her favorite college football teams -the Ohio State Buckeyes and the University of Texas Longhorns. After her children were grown she took up golf which gave her great pleasure. Other great passions were keeping up with her friends, reading novels, and working puzzles.
Survivors include three children, a son-in-law, and daughter-in-law: Nancy Calland Hart of Rockville, Md., Janet Calland Lipp and Dr. Victor Lipp of San Diego CA, Dr. John and Debbie Calland of San Antonio; 7 grandchildren, Ann Hart Malekzadeh, Jaime Lipp Biondi, Greg Lipp, Michael Calland, Christopher Calland, Steven Calland and Justin Calland; and 5 great-grandchildren, Zoe Malekzadeh, Kaitlin Malekzadeh, Evan Biondi, Brett Biondi, and Darcy Calland. The family would like to thank Golden Manor Jewish Home for the Aged and Vitas Innovative Hospice Care for the excellent care they provided.
