Betty Joan Ablett Hanson was born November 1, 1933, in Staten Island, New York. After graduating from Curtis High School in 1951, Betty was a secretary for the New York City Branch of the FBI. Her commute into the city involved a ferry ride, subway, and bus. Betty joined Capital Airlines in 1953 as a flight attendant.
It was through her travels to and layovers in Detroit, Michigan that Betty met Thomas (Tom) Hanson. Marrying in 1956 and welcoming two daughters Diane Lizabeth and Kristen Jean their early marriage had the family settling in Michigan. Tom enlisted as a career officer in the Army in 1961. Assignments included Fort Sill, Oklahoma, 130th Station Hospital/Patrick Henry Village, Heidelberg Germany, Washington DC /Virginia, Fort Leavenworth Kansas (twice) and Fort Sam Houston, Texas (twice). Betty made each and every house assigned to the family “on post”, a beautiful home. In the early 70s in between moves from Kansas to Texas, Betty became a licensed real estate agent. She enjoyed an exciting time in San Antonio real estate. Retiring from the military in 1979, Betty and Tom settled in San Antonio in the Churchill Forest neighborhood. Betty completed her Associates Degree in Paralegal studies from San Antonio College, worked various jobs for Valero, a local jeweler and later was a 2000 census taker. Divorced in 1992, Betty embraced a life filled with family, granddaughters and travel. Betty had friendships with former classmates from Curtis High French Club. They called themselves the “Amiees”. Betty enjoyed visits and travel with this group of friends spanning 70 years. In later years, Betty enjoyed a close-knit group of friends and neighbors frequently invited for coffee on Saturday mornings at her home on Kiltey.
