Her father worked for the Reading Railroad supporting the massive Hershey Chocolate manufacturing in Hershey. Her mother was both a homemaker and active in women’s voting rights and registration in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The effects of the Depression molded her home life and later economic values.
Betty’s rise to adulthood was filled daily with the smell of chocolate, and hard work propelled her to many typing and office skill championships. She graduated in 1939 from Hershey High School where she wrote the music and words for the class song.
Betty and Capt. Howard Huff were married on March 3, 1946 and saw many military assignments around the world. Betty’s typing and shorthand skills allowed her to join Howard in post World War II China working as a U.S. Government employee. Later assignments took them as a family to Japan, Spain and various duty stations in the U.S.Betty and Howard Huff, Sr. had four children together- Donald (Japan), Lance (Ohio), Howard Jr. (Spain) and Pamela (Pennsylvania). She never missed any of her children’s school events and played piano to accompany her children, grandchildren and their friends during band solo and ensemble contests.
During Howard Sr.’s later years of failing health she supported and cared for him. This care and love carried over to her six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.Betty had a true love for her pets. She had many cats and dogs in her life. She adopted older rescue dogs, usually boxer mixes that became part of the family and made her dogs’ final years special.
Betty was part of “The Greatest Generation” molded by the Depression, the value of hard work, patriotism and living a frugal life.
Betty’s willingness to listen and her love for life, her family, and country will be missed.
