I am very sorry to hear of the loss of Betty.  She was one of my 1st grade teachers and principal of my 2nd grade school, Serna Elemementary on Austin Highway.  She was the mother of three friends of mine.  She always had a smile and a cheerful greeting every time I saw her.

  I knew Betty when I lived in Three Rivers and worked at one of the local banks.  I made cookie trays every year at Christmas time and she always ordered from me. I so enjoyed her friendship.  My deepest sympathy to all of you.

Betty was a good friend at North East ISD. She was my inspiration when I was a fledgling PE teacher. I have fond memories of her and our adventures as teachers.  My husband, Harold, and I send our condolences to her family.

Betty was my favorite traveling companion.  My girls: Jody and Sheryl Gutierrez were in the Mac band in the late 60's and early 70's.  When the band traveled out of town for contest she always went with us as a school rep. and as my room mate.  We had great times together and I will always remember what a great LADY she was. Betty was the perfect inspiration for spunky, no nonsense, energetic vertically challenged young women everywhere!One summer school session at MacArthur Betty helped me disarm a motley trio who'd come on campus with gunplay mishchief in mind. With total aplomb she took the pistol from me that I had foolishly apprehended from a miscreant, and with gusto marched the young fools off to the main office. She was my favorite Evaluation Observer and one particularly memorable time, a senior English student cautioned me to "talk softer 'cause Mrs. Johnson was taking a little nap"!!! Another time - after an especially frightening hair cutting choice - when I'd whined about appearing at school looking like Sinead O'Connor - Betty guffawed: "oh, just put on a bonnet and get on with it, Willis"! I worked with Betty many years at MacArthur HS - she as counsellor and VP and I as Science Dept chair. In addition to all the good attributes ascribed to her by others, she also helped me buy my first pickup truck (actually thru her husband) at Kinsel Ford Sales. Got a good deal - she could do most anything. We all will miss you, Betty.

Many of my fondest childhood memories involve Aunt Betty even though she lived in Texas and I grew up in Tennessee. As Pug's oldest grandaughter it was a positive "must" that we visted and traveled with Aunt Betty as she and my grandmother Pug were so close. I loved her endless energy, her spunk and her sincere care for us as children. She shared many wisdoms with me growing up that I have drawn on as an adult. And she shared many, many laughs as well. I will truly miss you fine lady and I have no doubt that you are in Heaven organizing, counseling and telling many a good story to the folks up above. Thoughts and condolences to your family left behind.

Thanks to Paula, otherwise, not sure if anyone from my class MAC 88 would have known. My brother class 79' sister class 81 (deceased) and myself all proud grads. I recall many times being given a smile, couldn't help return in kind, as I passed Ms. Gambell, Mr. McBee, Bill Boyd, then the door closing behind me in Mr. Kyles office. Memories. We all share in the good and bad. Betty was supportive and genuine in her nature allowing us to lower our guard and speak our troubles or concerns. Personally, I'm sorry for your loss, MAC class 88 remembers "our" year and all, both students and faculty we carry forward within us.

Betty was an administrator at MacArthur High School when I started teaching there in the 1980s and I have many fond memories of working with her. I especially enjoyed her great sense of humor and enthusiam for any task. I'm sure her memory will live on in the many students, teachers and others whose lives she touched. My sincere condolences to her family.

I have to say, when I think of my years at MacArthur, I many times think of Betty (Johnson at the time).  I think how she guided me, listened, challenged me, cared for me and kept me in line.  She was truly impactful in my life.  I will always think of her fondly.  Prayers go out to her family.  Thank you for sharing her with us!

Betty was a positive role model for youth and parents in the 1980's when I met her as a guest at a PTA meeting.  We became better friends through Minette Buzzini and I last saw Betty when in Three Rivers she and her husband toured me through the new park there.  I will always remember Betty for her enthusiasm for life.  I wish to express my sympathy for your loss.

A true North East District Treasure....a wonderful teacher, administrator, and leader.  Everyone who knew her loved her and she loved them.  She was sought after as a mentor to many and she was admired by her peers.  She was always full of energy and passion.  She found joy in everyones achievement and success.  No one could have a better friend.  She now resides with the Heavenly Stars.

I have many wonderful memories of Betty, along with her husband Bob and sister, Pug.  I didn't meet Betty until she married Bob and moved to Live Oak County, but spent many happy hours with her then, and I have missed her since she moved back to San Antonio.  She was a valued member of Brush Country Cattlewomen, and was active in several other Live Oak County Organizations. There wasn't a job Betty couldn't handle. I guess she is getting things organized in Heaven now.  God Bless her, and her family, too.

From Doug Hallmark, Craig Hallmark (deceased 2008), and Tama Blend; We grew up with Betty and the boys, Harry & I were in 1st grade class together; with Betty (doing three jobs) at the old Austin Hiway Serna Elem. Then up thru Krueger & Roosevelt, along with our mother, Joyce, the attend. sec.  And finally Craig served with Betty at MacArthur.  We three kids became career educators (and two wives). Tama just retired from NEISD this past summer. What a pleasure to know this family and to have benefited from Betty's love, mothering and influence during our school years and later from her guidance and friendship as teachers/administrators. She was one of a kind and one of the best. Vivacious, tireless, smart, firm, fair, athletic, versatile, ethical, student-centered, progressive, tough but beautiful-inside and out. I remember Betty when she was  my PE teacher at Roosevelt High School, and many years later as an Administrator of Douglas MacArthur High School. I will miss her beaming smile and energetic personality. She was a spirited beautiful lady. My condolences to her family. God Bless You.

One of my best memories of Aunt Betty is spending a weekend with her in 2004, talking with her next to the lime trees and chasing off armadillos with a shotgun. She was an amazing woman that I will miss very much.
