Carl Robert Ramsey, beloved father and grandfather, bid his friends and family farewell to be with his Savior on February 9, 2021. He was born on January 24, 1931 in Michigan where he spent his earliest years. When Carl was 8 years old, his parents, Charles and Marie Ramsey, moved the family to Oklahoma to pursue a Native American cure for his mother’s Hodgkin's disease which proved successful.
Carl was known as a rebel rouser as a child and teenager. There were many stories of oil derrick climbing, train track parachuting, moonshine buying and many other adventures that were never fully shared with his children. The counterweight to his wild streak was two very grounded parents who were strong in their faith. Carl grew up seeing his father kneeling in his bedroom praying every morning, and we can be sure Grandad Chuck was praying for Carl.
In 1948, Carl graduated from McAlester High School. He spent the next few years working various jobs including mining in Colorado before joining the Air Force during the Korean War. While his military service was not something he spoke about often, we know he served with great pride for his country. After serving in the Air Force, he pursued a degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma graduating in 1958. We would be remiss not to mention Carl's love of football from playing in high school equipped only with a leather helmet, to attempting to walk-on at The University of Oklahoma, to becoming a devoted college football fan who never missed an OU game on TV if he could help it.
After graduating in 1958, Carl began a very fulfilling 42-year career in the oil industry that he immensely enjoyed. While working for Lone Star Producing Company, he supervised the drilling of the Bertha Rogers NO 1, which was the deepest well in the world at over 31,000 feet. Later the oil business allowed him to travel around the world. During much of Carl’s career he worked in Midland, TX where he retired from Timber Sharp Drilling as president.
Carl was married to Paula for 42 years and they raised three daughters and a son. Although they moved several times in their marriage, they considered Midland home until they retired to Lake LBJ. Of all of his accomplishments, Carl's greatest pride in life was his family. He invested in his children’s lives creating many wonderful memories of going to church, camping, boating and hunting. Carl was devoted to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed being the patriarch to a group of people he loved. Carl was a known fixture in his children and grandchildren's lives, regularly attending countless sporting events, baptisms, graduations, marriages, and family gatherings. He leaves behind a family that was well loved and supported. We, his family, are grateful for the example of hard work, integrity, Christian faith, and generosity that he displayed.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Paula Jean Ramsey. He is survived by his brother Richard Ramsey; his children and their spouses: Dana and West Warren, Renee and Raymond Brickey, Jennifer and Michael Holleman, and Mike and Aubry Ramsey; his 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his best friend and loving companion Barbara Kolb.
