Maria DelCarmen Melendrez Castillo Thorn was born in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico on November 8th 1945 to Jose Clemente and Irene Melendrez. She became a beautician at the age of sixteen and was self employed as such, owning several beauty shops over the years. She eventually settled in Somerset, Texas where she opened Carmen's Hair Salon continuing her passion of cosmetology.
She was married to Henry Z. Castillo (Vet. WWII) of San Antonio for 25 years. During that time, after the death of her sister, she took in her niece Alma Aguinaga and served as a mother to her. Years after the passing of Henry Castillo, she married Colonel James R. Thorn of San Antonio. They lived happily for six years in Somerset until his death in 2003. After the death of her second husband she briefly continued to work as a beautician part time but focused primarily on being a loving mother, aunt and grandmother to her three grandchildren.
Her greatest passion was caring for her family. She took great pride in watching her grandchildren play sports and other activities and simply having them around to share her love and good cooking.
She was proud of her Mexican heritage and culture and was also a very patriotic American. She loved all types of music, especially that of Marichis and when the opportunity was there, she loved to dance. She took great interest in reading during her quite time and was always drawn to the latest best sellers.
She will missed by all.
