Carol H. Weir was born in Austin, Texas on December 6, 1939, the eldest child of Charles F. Herring and Doris Herring. In the tradition of her grandparents and mother, she was a "Cradle Catholic", and was baptized as an infant and remained a faithful Catholic for her entire life. Her death occurred on May 8, 2008 at home.
Her parents and two nephews preceded her in death and she is survived by her husband, Warren; her siblings, Ann, Charles and Antonia; and her children, Charles, Bruce and Carren; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren and two beloved dogs.
After achieving a Master's Degree in Psychology from Trinity University she graduated from St. Mary's Law School in 1983 and worked as a respected attorney for almost 25 years. She distinguished herself in law as one of the first San Antonio attorneys who represented abused children as an attorney ad litem. She was frequently appointed by the Courts to represent babies and small children who had such physical defects or injuries that they faced death. She also represented mothers and fathers who were trying to regain the custody of their own children. Many of such parents remained her friends.
Gov. Ann Richards appointed Carol, a personal friend, to the Governor's Commission on Persons with Disabilities on which she served for several years. Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, Rose Spector, recommended her to the Supreme Court for appointment to the Appeals Board for Attorney's Discipline on which she served for several years. In October 2007 at the Red Mass for attorneys and judges, she was awarded Catholic Lawyer of the Year by the San Antonio Catholic Lawyers Guild. In April 2008, she was recently awarded the first Carolyn Thurmond Community Service Award by the San Antonio Bar Foundation.
She was a member of the San Antonio Founder Lions Club. All who knew her are grateful that they were able to share her talent and love.
