It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carolyn Ann Thompson, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, in San Antonio, TX. She was 88 years old. She was born on July 8, 1935, in Philadelphia, PA to Max and Emilie Wolf.
Carolyn dedicated 33 years of her life as a teacher, sharing her love of cooking and sewing with countless students. She started her career in Philadelphia, but because of her desire to travel and see the world, she moved to Kaiserslautern, Germany where she taught for 3 years. After her time in Germany, she eventually ended up in San Antonio, TX, where she taught Home Economics at Marshall High School for 13 years. It was during this time that Carolyn attended Texas A&M Kingsville and earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education, so that she could teach special needs students at Sul Ross Middle School. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching these kids how to cook, use commercial grade restaurant equipment, run a cash register, count change and run their own school cafe for teachers and administrators.
Beyond her dedication to the classroom, she was a fervent lover of music. She channeled her passion by playing the piano, organ and singing in her church choir. Carolyn was also a member of two German choral groups, the San Antonio Beethoven Damenchor and the Austin Saengerrunde. Her membership with both organizations allowed her to perform at a multitude of events all around Texas (Austin, New Braunfels, Houston, Dallas and of course, San Antonio). She even traveled to Germany twice to share her voice and love of singing and music.
Travel was another of Carolyn’s great loves which began when she was in her teens, with her first trip to visit family in Germany. She roamed the world with a sense of wonder and curiosity, collecting memories and experiences from every corner of the globe. Her adventurous spirit led her to explore the rich tapestry of different cultures, such as Egypt, the Netherlands, Japan, Fiji, Australia, France, Austria, and Germany, just to name a few.
When she wasn't traveling across continents or sharing the gift of music, she found comfort and relaxation in sewing and decorating. Her creative talents knew no bounds, and she was known for her ability to transform her home into a festive wonderland for every holiday. Whether it was Christmas, Halloween, Easter, or any other occasion, her house was always fully decorated and a source of joy for all who visited.
As a dedicated member of Leon Springs Presbyterian Church for almost 50 years, she was strong in her faith and worked hard to give back whenever she could. She was a fill-in secretary when needed; she was a member of various committees to help with whatever was needed; she was the wedding coordinator for years and spent countless hours helping couples make their special day as pleasant and stress free as possible. She thoroughly enjoyed serving others.Carolyn will forever be cherished and remembered for her unwavering dedication to education, her love of music, her adventurous spirit, and her boundless creativity. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, friends, students and all those whose lives she touched with her kindness and passion.
Carolyn is survived by her children, Stacee Thompson, Jill Thompson, and Troy Thompson (wife Kendra); and her grandchildren, Austin, Karli, Kooper, and Kinsley.
A memorial service will be held at Leon Springs Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, TX on Saturday, November 4th at 11am. A private graveside service will take place October 26th at 1:30pm at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Broomall, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in her honor, as she would have wanted to support research and care for those affected by this challenging condition.
