

Our beloved mother, grandmother and sister, Carolyn Garner Thurmond, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 12, 2007. She was born on November 7, 1940, in Austin, Texas, to Bertha and Oscar Garner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas M. Thurmond; daughter, Shannon Giltner and granddaughter, Linzi Thurmond.
She is survived by her sons, Mitchell Thurmond and wife, Debra; Patrick Thurmond and wife, Kristal; Roger Thurmond and wife, Melissa; son-in-law, Mark Giltner and wife, Susan; sisters, Edith Heilhecker and husband, Ron, and Janice Kitz and husband, Tom; grandchildren, Nicholas, Madeline, Tyler, Blake and Luke Thurmond; Breck, Aimee, Halah, John and Bonnie Giltner; Melissa and Edward Vandercook. Great-grandchildren; Richard, Albanie and Elias Vandercook. Carolyn was the Executive Administrator of the San Antonio Bar Foundation.
Carolyn was actively involved with the Annual Courthouse Fun Run, the Peacemaker Awards Gala, the Wills Clinic, and People's Law School at St. Mary's School of Law. She was active in Junior Forum and San Antonio Bar Auxiliary. Carolyn was very active in her church community and served on the Matthew Laity Team at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. In 2006 Carolyn received the prestigious "Liberty Bell Award" for outstanding service in the legal community.
Carolyn was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Carolyn served as president of many organizations and committed herself to everything in which she was involved. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
