This extraordinary, generous, committed lady will be missed very much by all of us. Her selfless nature and dedication to each and every project she undertook will not be forgotten.

Our sympathies and prayers are with you. We have just returned from a trip, and only as I scanned the papers did I learn of Carolyn's death. When my first husband David was struggling with cancer, and then died, Carolyn was one of my "rocks" of faith and love at St. George where my current husband Paul and I are members now, and I was then. When Carolyn and I both served on the vestry, we were "roomies" at a vestry retreat, and I cherished her laughter and her spiritual good sense. In the last few years, I have missed seeing her, but I have never forgotten her. Dear Edith and Ron, Janice and Tom and to all of your families - Our tribute to Carolyn which we sent to Mitch and Debbie, Patrick and Krystal, Roger and Melissa, their children and Mark and his family got so lengthy that we decided to send another tribute in memory of Carolyn to just you all. Edith, you, especially will recall some of those memories that I, Mary Ann, recall as follow: It is very difficult to realize that our dear Carolyn will no longer be with us. As cousins, we shared so many activities in our lives. As a little girl, I remember visiting each other in our homes - often taking the bus across Austin - from Theresa Avenue to Bellvue Avenue, which was at that time near the northern city limits. It was a long bus ride - and many of the times her daddy, Uncle Oscar, was the one who was driving our bus! Then we spent the night at each other's homes. Our mothers sisters visited and we played - and always, we waited for the ice cream man to come and almost always we got banana ice cream on a stick or dreamsicles vanilla ice cream with an orange coating. I remember us going to Mutter and Fatter in the country. Often it was my mother, my older brother, myself, Aunt Betty, Uncle Oscar, Carolyn and Edith -all packed into the Model A that Uncle Oscar had. The trip that now takes less than an hour to Manheim, Texas near Giddings took us at least two hours. But that didn't matter. Because we were laughing and singing and giggling all the way going - ofen listening to Uncle Oscar's whistling "You Are My Sunshine" - the windows open to keep us cool and blowing our hair or bundled up, sitting close, windows closed, to keep warm - NO AC OR HEAT! - to Mutter and Fatter. That's what we called our grandmother and grandfather Horn and in German it means Mother and Father. And we knew we'd have so much fun when we got there - feeding cows, pigs and chickens, gathering eggs, "milking cows" oh, wow! and there was ALWAYS the best food! And we even had the measles together!! Do you remember that, Edith? As we mentioned to the others, we missed Carolyn at the last Horn reunion - and little did we know that she would not share another Horn reunion with us. But that is not really true! We will have a wonderfully magnificant Horn reunion in heaven - and what joy that will be. We know that you will miss your sister and aunt, as will we. We regret that we did not have the opportunity to visit with her in the hospital or in hospice. But we remembered her in thought and prayer. And maybe not seeing her was just as well; because we will remember her and her beautiful face as we saw her at our 50th wedding anniversary. Her inner and outer beauty were examples of her Christianity. We are sad with you; but rejoice with you. For while our prayers to heal her and extend her life on earth were not answered to our will; God in His wisdom has healed her permanantly, without pain for all eternity. We know that you have that blessed assurance! We love all of you and pray that we take more time to visit and share with you. To the Thurmond Family, Please accept our deepest condolences on the loss of your beloved mother. She was always kind to us whenever we saw her. Carolyn was a very colorful person who always had a funny anecdote to pass on to us. It was an honor to have known know her and she will be missed.

Dear Mitch,Patrick and Roger, I was so sad to hear of Aunt Carolyn's death. I have fond memories of your mom. She was very, very kind to me. All the miles have made it hard to keep up with your family throughout the years. I'm am so sorry that you and your families have to experience the heartache of your mom's death. My mom would have attended your mom's funeral but is recuperating from surgery as I think Jamey and Uncle Pete have probably told you. She was sad that she wasn't able to be with you to share memories and grieve with you. I hope that the weeks and months bring much healing and peace for you. Boys, I am so sorry. Carolyn is one of the finest ladies I have ever known. She never had an unkind thing to say about anyone and loved you kids more than anyone can describe. There's nothing more to say other than this world just became lesser...love you all and would love to see you. I am in Lubbock and will not be there today at the funeral. How gracious and hospitable they always were! Hmmmm, seems like we were always eating!! It was most difficult losing her beloved Tom and Shannon...and then little Linse spand we mourned with her; but we could not really feel the void she was feeling in her life. Yet she remained strong and was a comforter to many because of those losses in her life. She always rallied when illness befell her - and we were sure she would again this time. 
But God had other plans. I could go on and on. The last time we got to visit with Carolyn personally was at our 50th wedding anniversary - and I commented on how good she looked. And though our visit was brief, we'll never forget that we had the special time together. From then on it was just e-mails. But we missed her sorely at the Horn reunion. Little did we know that she would never have the opportunity to join us in that reunion again. Oh, but I am wrong! We WILL rejoin her in another Horn reunion...in HEAVEN! And how blessed that will be! We rejoice that Carolyn's faith never faltered and that she loved her Lord to the end of her time on earth. The only regret I have is that we didn't get to see her before she left this earth. But we told Mitch, Pat and Roger to tell her that we loved her and that she was always in our prayers. God didn't answer our prayers in the way we had wished - that she could be healed and have remained here with us a while longer. But he did answer our prayers in that she IS HEALED - PERMANENTLY WITHOUT ANY PAIN! We praise God for that! And to you, Mitch and Debbie, Patrick and Krystal, Roger and Missy, and to all your children; to Mark and all of his family - thank you for being so faithful and loving to your mother. Truly you blessed your mother with your love for her! As for Carolyn, we'll miss her and she will remain forever in our hearts. My heart goes out to all of you, knowing that your Mom will be dearly missed by all. Just wanted you to know that your Mom was a great inspiration to me. Always full of joy and compassion. She is what I would call a "GRAND" lady. You could always feel her love shine though. I am so grateful that the lord placed her in my path. Know that your MOM is in a better place with all her best friends now, especially the one she missed the most your Dad. Your mom helped me in many ways to get through my grief. She was one of the most sincere and devoted Christians, and with a positive attitude, I have ever known. She will be missed by many, many people. She was much loved. I will keep all of you in my prayers. I hope you are comforted by knowing your mom is not suffering now, and she is back with her beloved family that preceded her in death, If there is any way I can help any of you please let me know.
