'Charlie's passing saddens my heart so very much. It was always fun seeing him at the family gatherings when Jack and I managed to visit back in San Antonio almost every year. He was always such a gentle, caring man and I was proud to call him my cousin. Beverly, you'll be in my thoughts and prayers.'

'Charlie was one of kind. He could get along with anyone. I was first stationed at Fire Station #5 when I was in EMS and was on C shift with Charlie. At the time EMS was on the same schedule as Firefighting. That was when I first met Charlie and saw what a nice man he was and grew to like and admire him. I transferred but came back to #5C as a Lt. I told Charlie that I didn"t have much firefighting experience as I had only been on a truck crew and EMS since joining the Fire Dept. We had three sizes of firefighting hose on our pumper and I asked how do I know for sure which hose to use on a house fire. Charlie responded by giving a big smile and saying "It's simple just remember big fire-big line, small fire-small line". That was an overly simplified answer but when Charlie came into the Fire Dept. they only had one inch rubber hose and 2 1/2 cotton hose lined with rubber. So I asked him how often they would use a 2 1/2 inch handline and he said some shifts ten times. That had to be hard because 2 1/2 ich hand lines are very heavy and hard to control when under pressure. I said WOW I guess that was when men were men. He said "You got that right". That was Charlie a real "Man". He was a great firefighter and made hards things look easy. He was very strong, knew how to pace himself and never complained. I learned a lot about firefighting from Charlie which made my transition an easy one and I was thankful for that. Charlie was one of the good ones and I know that he will be deeply missed by all.'

'Charlie, you always had a smile for everyone you encountered, what a sweet and loving man. While this earth has lost such a wonderful human being, we must take comfort in knowing that heaven has gained an Angel to guide us from above. Thank you for sharing your son Chuck with our family. He is such an asset to us, a great son and brother-in-law, whom you no doubt, instilled all the great qualities anyone could ever hope for. We promise to keep him close at heart for you. Rest in Peace Mr. Ahrens.
