I paused here today to tell you that almost 9 years since you passed away, I still feel the loss and my forever love for you deep in my heart. Your first great great grandchild was born last week. Gracelynn May Frie, was born to my Zachary (your first great grandchild) and his beautiful fiancee Hailey. The family you and Memaw began all those years ago continues to grow in size and love. When I came to your room right after you passed I told you I had loved you my whole life and it is still true to this day. My love for you began at my birth and will live on inside me and future generations forever. I know Memaw joined you a year ago and as hard as it was to let her go, we knew it was time for you two to be together. Your love lives forever in the family you left behind.

Papaw, You are so missed by me and my entire family! I enjoyed every moment we spent together in San Antonio as well as when we came to visit you and Memaw when you lived in Portland. I want to thank you again for having the faith in me to marry your precious granddaughter, Tonya. She is a very caring and compassionate individual; values of which I know were instilled in her by you. I always thought of you as my grandfather. I will miss you greatly. It is hard to believe it has been more than a month since Papaw has been taken. I think of him often, mainly of all the things I remember about him and the things I think he was trying to teach me. As I have matured over these years I have realized that Papaw taught the way he best new how, he did what he wanted you to do. It seems so obvious, but it is so hard. I can think of hundreds of instances in my time with him that illustrates this point but I guess a few stand out the most. 
I remember one time I told him I wanted to grow up to be like him, I must have been around 10 or so, maybe a little older, and as I waited to hear his reply, he paused looked at me and then said that he wanted me to be better than he was. I remember being so stunned when he said that as I thought, ?that is impossible, that is like being smarter than dad or nicer than mom or faster than superman!? I mean, here is a guy that can smash his finger with a hammer and not even slow down his work, or can fish for hours with nothing but a thermos of coffee to keep him going. The funny thing is, when we are kids, everything seems bigger than it really is, but you know, he still is big to me and what he asked me to do is still a very tall order. 
He had a way of saying things that was clear and direct and carried a lot of meaning. Like the time we were driving and saw some of the more questionable elements from school and after I explained what they were he told me, ?well, then if I ever see you with them, I will bring you home with a two-by-four.? This wasn?t a threat but a reminder of his expectations and to this day, when I make decisions; I think about that 2X4 and I always come back to what I think he would want me to ask, ?what is the right thing to do.? 
Another that I will remember till my own time come to leave this world is when Laurie and I last spoke with him before he died. He was in bed, working so hard to breath that it must have been unbearable. Yet, he joked with us, told us he was glad to see us and then, with the stern but comforting voice I had heard my whole life said, ?Have you still been going to church?? I answered, ?Yes sir, every Sunday!? He just smiled a little and said, ?That?s good.? Even in his last days, he cared about his family and was able to muster the strength to ask, with genuine concern, about church. He was, and in my memories, IS a very, very good man. He worked hard, loved his family, loved Christ and put those values before everything else and as a result, left an enduring legacy. 
I could write for hours about Papaw and what he meant to me but I am not sure how much I can post on this thing. I guess what I wanted to do was to say how much he influenced my life but this short little essay is inadequate for that goal. It doesn?t scratch the surface. Suffice to say that as man looking back over my short life thus far I can say that I have been blessed by knowing so many wonderful role models. My mother and father worked so very hard to give me a normal life and they made choices that kept me with my grandparents through those all-important years. This has made all the difference in my life. Through all those times with Papaw; shooting, fishing, talking or just sitting I learned so much from loving coffee to a deeper understanding of the Christian Life. He was what a grandfather should be for everyone. I thank my parents for keeping us near them, Memaw and Papaw for staying close to us and most of all God for giving us so many wonderful years with a man so great as our Papaw!

I miss you very much, Papaw. I have so many wonderful memories of you, but two that really stand out are the time you walked me down the aisle along with Dad at my wedding and the time I visited with you in the ICU. It has been a joy and a privilege to know and love you. I will never, ever stop missing you and loving you, and I will keep your memory alive for my children. And please don't worry...we will take care of Memaw. Always in my heart,

He was the best peach grower in the whole world. He was a very nice man. I love him a lot. There will never be a nicer or better Great-grandfather than Papaw was.

To the family of Mr. Campbell, We are sending our thoughts and love to each of you at this time of your loss. I remember many happy times spent with all of you while I was in high school. Mr. Campbell was a very funny and kind man. He always welcomed me when I would come home with Sandra , which was very often. My husband only met Mr. Campbell once , many years ago in Portand, but he shares in my sorrow as does the rest of our family, at your great loss. To Irma and family, it is with such fond memories that we will alway have for Charlie. What a gentleman and good fried he IS! We thank our Lord for the privilege of having a Christian 
brother like him. Our love and thoughts go out to you all.

We will always remember Charlie, as a friend, neighbor of Harley & Louise Carrell, and a loving Christian , Deacon, and a real special man. We send our deepest sympathy to his family and friends and our hearts go out to you. We loved him too and he will be missed.
