He was born in Tahoka, TX and came to San Antonio at the age of three weeks old. Chuck graduated Thomas Edison High School in 1955 and joined the Navy that November, where he gave 23 years of service mainly on Nuclear Submarines in the field of Interior Communications. He also served aboard as Diving Officer.
He received many letters of commendation over the years in the Navy. While on Shore Duty in Tappan, New York in 1971, he received a commendation from the Secretary of the Navy. The children and I were always so very proud of him. He retired from the Navy in October 1979.
He then went to UTSA and obtained an accounting degree and worked for the IRS for 21 years. He retired on September 2, 2003 and gave Maria her dream vacation to Cape Cod.
He was a loving, affectionate husband, dad and "PaPa" to the little ones whom he dearly loved and they loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents Nellie and Bill Banks of San Antonio.
He is survived by his wife, Maria of nearly 40 years; son, Ray Brian Banks and wife, Michele; daughter, Pidge Ann David and husband, Jeff; son, Mark Charles Banks; five beautiful grandchildren, Alyssa Lemay, Charles Raeke, Ray Banks II, and one and a half year old twins Abbie and Maddie Banks. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Green and husband, Ronnie; and his brother, Keith Banks and wife Carol.
He will be greatly missed by his family.
We wish to thank our church family at Madison Hills Baptist Church for your prayers that have sustained us through this hard time, and numerous former co-workers that have, over the weeks, visited him at home; also, our loving neighbors who were always there when we were so discouraged. We would also like to thank Hospice Odyssey for sending the "Angels" out to our home to help us care for Chuck. They were the kindest most selfless people. We also wish to thank the speech and physical therapists at Health South Riosa and the ALS Association for the "speech box" that they gave Chuck to make it possible for him to communicate with us. Thank you for all your support and help. May the Lord richly bless each of you.
Chuck had a favorite vacation place and that was Yosemite National Park. He and our sons Ray and Mark went several times and hiked there. He and Mark went to Yosemite in 2001 and climbed to the summit of Half Dome. God had blessed Chuck with strength and health to be able to achieve this dream.
