

Dr. Charles Betts Fladger, born on November 28, 1923, in Celeste, Texas and raised in Denton, Texas, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2010. Charles, known affectionally as Charley, died of congestive heart failure.
He served 45 months in World War II as a P-51 Fighter Pilot in the Pacific Theater and in occupied Japan. Charley attended North Texas State University and Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio. He retired as a Podiatrist after 44 years of practice, in San Antonio. He was a member and served as President of Bexar County Podiatry Association and Past President of Texas Podiatric Medical Association and also a member of American Podiatric Medical Association. He served as a Clinical Instructor at the UTHSC Orthopedic/Podiatry Department for many years.
Charley was a past commander of the The San Antonio Sail and Power Squadron, a member since 1964, and was a member of Sons of the Republic of Texas. He had many hobbies, including fisherman, boatman, golfer, biker, wood carver, photographer, hunter, gardener, scuba diver, and underwater photographer for 25 years traveling to many different islands and countries throughout the world. Charley was a founding member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his wife, JoAnne Montgomery Fladger; his parents Wilhelmina Elizabeth Fladger and Joe Fladger; his sister Jean Alice Shanelec, and his brother-in-law Frank Rawls Barrow.
Charley is survived by his sister Betty Ann Barrow of Denton, Texas, his brother-in-law, Gail K. Pep Shanelec of Ellsworth, Kansas, his children Joseph Edwin Fladger, David Montgomery Fladger and wife Sally Fladger, Nancy Lynn Fladger Nye; and his five grandchildren, Joseph Ross Fladger, Mary Elizabeth Fladger and their mother, Mary Fladger, Casey Allan Nye, Russell Charles Nye, and Aaron Cavazos; one great grandchild, Chloe Exene Nye, and numerous nieces and nephews. Charley's words ring through to us: "Because I have loved life, I shall have no sorrow to die."
