

Born on June 11, 1933, Charlie lived a full and meaningful life marked by curiosity, service, and a deep devotion to his family. He shared 66 remarkable years of marriage with the love of his life, Carolyn Biard Heald. Married in 1958, their partnership was defined by deep affection, mutual respect, and unwavering support. Charlie was preceded in death by Carolyn, whom he missed dearly and with whom he is now reunited.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Vivian Heard Heald and Charles Metz Heald, Sr.; his nephew, David Madden; and his sister, Mary Heald Madden.
Charlie is survived by his beloved daughter, Debra Heald Wentworth; his son-in-law, Aaron Wentworth; and his cherished grandson, Charles Wentworth, who brought him immense pride and joy.
A lifelong learner and dedicated scientist, Charlie earned his bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry and his master’s degree in Plant Pathology from Texas A&M University, followed by a PhD in Nematology from Rutgers University. He devoted 33 years to the United States Department of Agriculture, serving as a research scientist, laboratory director, and research leader in Weslaco, Texas, before returning to Texas A&M as a research scientist in cotton pathology. Before completing college, he proudly served in the United States Army.
While Charlie’s professional accomplishments were many, his greatest pride and joy was always his family. To those who knew and loved him, he was an extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather—steadfast, gentle, thoughtful, and endlessly supportive. His legacy lives on through the generations he inspired and the family he cherished above all else.
