Charles “Charlie” Wagner Hummel, Jr., affectionately known as “Bull,” age 81, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on June 3, 1942, in Corsicana, Texas, to parents Charles and Jane Phillips Hummel. Charlie graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1960. He earned a BBA in finance from the University of Texas at Austin and was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Charlie had a long career in banking, working for Frost Bank for 14 years, and then as President & CEO of First City Bank for seven years. He retired from Merrill Lynch in 2005. After retiring, he enjoyed teaching Spanish at Alamo Heights High School as a substitute teacher.
An outdoorsman, Charlie loved hunting and spending weekends at his ranch in South Texas. In his younger years, he spent summers at the YO Ranch working as a hunting guide. Charlie was also an avid reader, with an interest in San Antonio and Texas history. He enjoyed playing tennis and golf with his friends at San Antonio Country Club for many years, until his health no longer permitted. Charlie had a real passion for UT football. On game day, he was up early and dressed in his white and orange Longhorn golf shirt and khaki shorts.
Charlie knew the Lord, and his faith grew even more after meeting evangelist John Guest. As a wonderful friend/brother, he helped bring others to the Lord. Charlie found great joy being involved in Guest’s ministry.
Charlie loved his family immensely and was always there for his three children – even when separated by miles. He enjoyed visits and hugs from his grandchildren, who called him “Poppy.” Charlie and his wife, Carmen, had 21 years of friendship and love.
The family is so grateful for the care and love Charlie received from the ladies at Marina’s Assisted Living. He was always treated with the utmost kindness and compassion while he was there.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Jane Hummel; brother, Hank Hummel; and sister, Len Hummel. Charlie is survived by his wife, Carmen Hummel; daughters, Helena Hummel Steubing (Will), and Amanda Hummel; son, Charles “Corky” Hummel; sisters, Nance Stepp (Al), and Laura Schrutka (Johnny); brothers, Craig Hummel, Chris Hummel (BJ), and Carl Hummel (Fran); and grandchildren, Luke Small and Leita Hummel-Keller.
