Charles Raymond Mcgibbon

Charles Raymond McGibbon, our loving father and grandfather, went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 9, 2009. He was a very kind, generous, and caring man. He was well loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. He loved the Indianapolis 500 races, enjoyed gardening and carpentry, and was a big Spurs fan. He was born on August 8, 1926, in Swayzee, Indiana, to Ford and Dora McGibbon. Following graduation from Swayzee High School in 1944, he attended Marion College, then Indiana University where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. Mr. McGibbon received a Bachelor's Degree in Arts in 1947 and a Master's Degree of Science in 1951. He became Board Certified with the State of Indiana as a science teacher and taught 7th and 8th grade in Sims, Indiana, from 1948-1951. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1951, stationed at Fort Sam, here in San Antonio, transferred to the Reserves in 1952, received honorable discharge in 1956. He loved San Antonio so much that he decided to make it his permanent home. Mr. McGibbon then became Board Certified with the State of Texas in 1953 and taught Social Studies and Science at Longfellow Junior High School and the administration office for SAISD from 1953-1969, taught at Ed White Middle School and became the Science Coordinator for NEISD from 1970 until he retired in 1998. Even after retirement, he continued to organize and judge area science fairs for about four or five years. From 1953-1974, he attended numerous science and administrative classes at San Antonio College, Incarnate Word, Our Lady of the Lake, and UTSA. He served on the Executive Board of the San Antonio Teachers' Council, NEISD Textbook Committee, lectured at St. Mary's University, was a Board Member of the Alamo Regional Science Fair and Engineering Board, Texas Academy of Science, Texas Junior Academy of Science, Texas State Teachers Association, National Geographic Society, and the American Legion. Mr. McGibbon was recognized for outstanding achievement by NEISD, San Antonio Chapter Phi Delta Kappa, Alamo Chapter Sigma Xi, National Science Teachers Association, South Texas Health Education Center, and Secondary Educators of America. He has an award named for him thru the Alamo Regional Science Fair and Engineering Board given to school's participation or scientific excellence in categories of Math, Computers and Physics. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Homer and Robert McGibbon from Swayzee, Indiana. Mr. McGibbon is survived by his sister, Margaret Toney of Marion, Indiana; son, Felipe Cardoza and wife Carmen, Yolanda Johnson; grandchildren, Charles Raymond and wife Maricella, Phillip Anthony, Candice Mercedez, Matthew Alexander Cardoza; and 5 great-grandchildren, all from San Antonio.
