

Charles R. Thompson passed away on December 8, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas. Charlie was born October 24, 1928 in Simms, Texas to Howard William Thompson and Oma Minnie Meadows Thompson. He attended Brackenridge High School and St. Mary's University. He was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 46 years Betty Jean Mattke Thompson and his parents. Charlie is survived by his two sons, Richard Thompson (Carol) and Brian Thompson (Lara): grandsons Matthew, Craig, Hunter and William Thompson. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army after a two year tour of duty, he returned to San Antonio to rejoin Ballard Surgical Supplies as a Sales Representative. Recognizing his entrepreneurial spirit, he joined in partnership with his father-in-law as Owner/Manager of the Downtowner Motel, grew the business in preparation for HemisFair 68 and for another 12 years. After a brief retirement, he went into partnership with Bill Rau as Owner/Partner of the South Texas Federal Ammunition Distributorship, where work and having fun was the daily chore. Charlie was a Life Member and Past President of the San Antonio Gun Club and an inaugural member and Past President of the San Antonio Hotel and Motel Association. He loved dove hunting and shooting quail side by side with his sons and grandsons behind his beloved pointers in South Texas, shooting skeet, trap and pigeons, along with a lot of bull with his family and friends at various clubs and ranches throughout South Texas. Most of all he loved his family and they loved him and will miss him greatly. Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
