Claudia Kay Houtcamp Kohler of Helotes, TX passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 21, 2013. She was born in Kalamazoo, MI in 1941. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1959 and earned her Associates of Science in Microbiology from Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon in 1985.
Some people are recognized for outstanding individual achievements during their lifetime. Claudia Kay Houtcamp Kohler did not live for recognition, she lived for her family, for joy, for learning, and for experiencing new adventures. Partnered with her devoted husband, Joe Kohler, their adventures took her North to Alaska, East to Europe, West to Hawaii, and South to Mexico. She broke boundaries seemingly without blinking; learning to pilot small planes, being a disc jockey, becoming a ham radio operator, and going to college while raising a family. She had careers as varied as a microbiologist, a human resources administrator, and a child support case worker in the district attorney's office among many other endeavors. In her spare time she volunteered with the police department in Alameda, CA and studied with the Berkeley Psychic Institute. Most recently, Claudia was a member of the board of the Friends Of The San Antonio Library and active member of two library branches of FOSAPL, raising money and reading to children. One of her favorite memories was learning to snorkel and swimming with dolphins, mana rays and all sorts of undersea creatures. She liked things to be done well and taught her children the same. Claudia made friends and kept friends for life. All of the wonderful qualities that could be named pale in comparison to this lady. She will missed something fierce.
Claudia leaves behind her husband of 46 years, Joe, three children (Timothy, Christopher and Susannah) and four grand children (Alondra, Mateo, Joe and Jake). She also leaves her sister’s family and high school friends in Kalamazoo, MI.
Memorial services will be held on August 7, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Sunset NW Funeral Home 6321 Bandera Rd. San Antonio TX 78238
