
In January of 1942, he graduated from Texas A & M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Chemical Corps.
He served in WWII with the 89th Chemical Mortar Battalion and continued active duty for thirty years on assignments in the Chemical Corps, and as an Army Logistician in a number of domestic and foreign locations.
He retired from active duty in the summer of 1972, worked a year outside of Washington D.C., and then moved to Lubbock, Texas, where he worked in financial administration for Texas Tech University. During his sixteen years with Texas Tech, he served as vice president of finance for the University and for the Texas Tech Health Science Center.
At the time of his death, he and his wife were living in the Army Residential Community in San Antonio, Texas.
He is survived by his wife. of 62 years, Peggy Westbrook; his daughter, Marie Burns and her husband, Hayden, of Houston; his sons: John T. Westbrook of Springfield, Virginia, James Van Ness Westbrook and wife, Nili, Michael W. Westbrook, and Clyde R. Dick Westbrook and wife, Patricia, all of Houston, Texas; his granddaughters, Elizabeth Burns of Houston, Sarah Winfrey of Houston; his grandsons Webb Burns and wife, Molly, of Roanoke, Virginia, and Daniel Glenn Westbrook of Springfield, Virginia; and his great grandson, Robert Hayden Burns of Roanoke, Virginia.
