Cruz lived a full and blessed life. She loved to travel, visiting New York, Chicago, Seattle, Hollywood and San Diego, just to name a few.
Cruz was a devout catholic and helped raise money to build St. Agnes Catholic Church where she belonged until 1962. She then moved to Sacred Heart Catholic Church; where she also raised money with her husband, Rudolph Avelar to build Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a member of the Gaudalupans. One could always find Cruz at church or in the kitchen on Sunday's helping out.
She retired from San Antonio College Child Development Center in 1984. Cruz was the cook for the center, and known as "Mrs. Cruz" to all the children. She loved fiesta week. Cruz went to all the parades and last year was a guest of Julie Croswell and family for the Battle of Flowers Fiesta Parade. She always sought after a front row seat and managed to get one last year in the front row.
Cruz loved her BUNCO and belonged to her Sunday Social BUNCO Club. She was an avid sports fan and especially loved her Spurs and Longhorns. Cruz never missed an opportunity to attend a live game. She even had an opportunity to attend several Houston Texans games alongside President George H. Bush.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Avelar; her son, Edward Avelar and his wife, Rosario Avelar; son-in-law, Isaac Martinez; her brother, Gregory Reyna Rose Teran and Lucy Garza.
Cruz is survived by her children, Theresa Martinez, Rudy Avelar of Houston, TX, Pedro Avelar, Larry Avelar, Andrew Avelar and his wife, Rosalinda; grandchildren, Sandy Aldrete, Cynthia Martinez, Dr. Isaac Martinez and wife, Vanessa, Edward G. Avelar (Monica Rangel), Ernest Avelar, Eric and wife, Karen, Josh Avelar of Lubbock TX; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Riva, Victoria, Brandon, Olivia Avelar, Adam Rey Aldrete of Houston, Isaac V.
