Cynthia Ann Cox Bigley, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend to many, passed away peacefully at the age of 66 on Sunday, November 19th, 2023, at her home in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by her adoring family. Cindy was born on July 18th, 1957, in Lawrence, Kansas, to Floyd Cecil Cox, Jr. and Cynthia Gay Cox.
Growing up, Cindy experienced moving to different parts of the country. Her family ultimately settled in the subdivision of Windcrest in San Antonio, Texas, where she graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1975. While in High School, she worked part-time at Joske's Diamond Salon until she attended Texas State in San Marcos. Her vibrant personality thrived in college while she was an Alpha Delta Pi sorority sister.
When she moved back to San Antonio from college, she proudly worked as the Executive Secretary for the President of Handy Dan, a mega building supply and hardware chain store. Throughout her life, she remembered this job as a wonderful teaching period; specifically, she always remembered and later shared her boss's mantra about responsibility, "the buck stops with you."
After the Handy Dan job, she accepted a position as supervisor of the technology department for one of the largest law firms in San Antonio, now known as Dykema. Her organizational abilities and excellent people skills immediately stood out among her peers and supervisors when she successfully implemented the Wang Computer System in the firm.
After marrying the love of her life, Michael J. Bigley of San Antonio, TX, in August 1983, Cindy explored her entrepreneurial spirit when she opened a new business called Reunion of Texas with her family and friends. This company planned and organized high school reunions. Cindy always preferred planning a perfect party rather than attending a party. In 1991, she, her father, and her husband opened a video rental store called Smash Hit Videos, which she helped become a staple in the community for renting movies.
However, Cindy always knew that her calling was prioritizing family and becoming a stay-at-home mom. Cindy and Mike's first son, Mitchell, was born in 1991, her second son, Drake, in 1994, and her last son, Preston, in 1997. When her oldest, Mitchell, started preschool at the Jewish Community Center (JCC), Cindy immediately became a homeroom mom. Her volunteerism at the JCC with classroom projects is well remembered, as a fellow mom once said she had a "knack for taking the most mundane job and turning it into a masterpiece."
In all three of the boys' schooling years, with the JCC, Huebner Elementary, Eisenhower Middle School, and Churchill High School, she continued raising the boys and volunteering as she tackled an extraordinary number of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) projects. As an example of one of her endeavors, she organized and launched the Huebner school carnival, which broke many records, such as attendance and the amount of money the carnival raised for the PTA.
In recognition of her outstanding volunteerism, Cindy received "The Texas PTA Honorary Life Membership Award" in 2003, the highest honor bestowed by the Texas PTA for distinguished service to children and youth.
Her generous heart did not stop there. All three of her sons participated in many sports from preschool through college, including hockey, T-ball, swimming, baseball, football, and basketball, and unsurprisingly, she supported the team coaches and players in many functions and always gave 110% in these activities.
Accordingly, as she wanted, this 110% attitude toward everything she took on inspired her three boys. Cindy passed with comfort, knowing that she fulfilled her calling, as shown by two of her sons working very successfully in the family business while Preston, the youngest, is enjoying his time at Texas AM School of Law.
As many condolences came from family and friends, people describe Cindy as having a contagious laugh, love for her family, undeniable loyalty, excellent organization and creativity, compassion, and many lifelong friends.
Cindy was preceded in passing by her cherished father, Floyd Cox Jr. One of the last projects she took on was writing her father's obituary, which was described as one of the most beautiful obituaries ever written: Link here Floyd Cox, Jr. Obituary (1932 - 2023) - Legacy Remembers.
She is survived by her loving husband, Michael, and her children—Mitchell, Drake, and Preston—her mother, Cynthia Gay Cox, and her siblings, Christoper B. Cox (Cheryl Ann) and Cathleen Cox. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned to be held in the Spring of 2024 at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider donating to St. Jude's charity.
