Cindy was born on July 15, 1954. She spent her childhood attending dance classes with her sister Linda and weekends at Canyon Lake with family. Cindy graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1972 and then attended Texas State University where she was a Strutter on the dance team. After graduating in 1976, she began her career as an educator. She then earned her Masters Degree with a specialty in reading from The University of Texas at San Antonio in 1980. Her time in education spanned 27 years in Texas public schools, predominantly teaching middle school reading. Cindy was an avid reader and inspired others to love books.
In 1979, a mutual friend arranged a blind date where she met her husband, Jerry. They wed a few months later and were married for 46 years. Jerry and Cindy had two daughters, Chelsea and Jessica, and were very involved in activities for their girls from dance performances to summer swim meets, and teaching Sunday School at Coker Methodist Church. The two of them enjoyed nights out with friends at restaurants, shopping, cruises and traveling during retirement, and spending time with loved ones. In 2019, they became grandparents and cherished creating memories with their grandchildren, Kendall and Josiah.
During retirement, Cindy learned to play mahjong with friends in Jazzy J’s dance class. She always found joy in learning new skills. Cindy also kept in touch with teacher colleagues and enjoyed catching up over lunch visits. She will be remembered for her faith, kind heart, loyalty, friendliness, resiliency, and most importantly as “Gram Gram” to her two grandchildren. She never failed to put the needs of others ahead of her own. Her husband Jerry was a dedicated caregiver for Cindy throughout her illness, and she was fortunate for his unwavering support.
Cindy was preceded in death by her daughter, Jessica Hawkins Rodriguez; parents, Ed and Nelda Wells; grandparents, Leonard and Ola Lankford; in-laws, Lonnie and Thelma Hawkins; sister-in-law, Kathy Hawkins; and brother-in-law, Kirby Johnston.
